I had a great time, but was very nervous and worried about my own competition of course, especially since it was my first fleadh. I tried to find a session Friday night, but only could find private bands rehearsing. Maybe someone started one after I left, I didn't want to stay up too late anyway.
But yeah, it was lots of fun, I even placed 3rd in the 15-18 fiddle! To answer your question about the judges, I thought my judge was great, she was very nice, and gave us plenty of good advice at the end as well. I'm eager to get her comments in the mail. I didn't get to stay Saturday evening, had to get home, so I missed out on the evening competitions. Oh, and I was wondering, does anyone know where the midwest fleadh will be held next year?
Saturday night sessions were pure ecstacy after all of the stress of the day. Great craic! Watching the sun rise over the arch in the sun room of the Mariott to the fantastic music that was occuring was bliss.
The band competition was SOOOOOOOOOOO long - 7pm to 12:30am!
I thought that Detroit class C groupai cheoil was robbed blind. I would love anyone to explain the outcome of that competition to me. Broken Pledge rocked the house as always - they are pure fun to listen to.
My trio was judged by Gearoid O'hAllmhurain, and I thought that his comments about the duet and trio competitions were EXTREMELY helpful. He uses a great mix of compliments and suggestions.
Also the adjudicator workshop hosted by Paddy Ryan was great. It gave some insight into the whole process, but despite what anyone says, I still believe that there is alot of personal opinion that goes into the process of adjudication.
THANK YOU. My thoughts exactly about Detriot C group! And yes, I felt that many of the adjudicators were very biased on their competitors. Not all, but many.
Hey what age group were you in for your trio?? I was in the 18 and Over group. Was Gearoid O'hAllmhurain judging all the trios? If yes, then I agree, he was very helpful!
OH, and YES, the Saturday night sessions were a blast! It was so weird how its 1am.. then suddenly its 5! Goodtimes!
The tunes we played in our set were the Mooncoin Jig, which the harpist came up with, The Generous Lover (air), which we got from the singing of Dolores Keane, Tuamgrainey Castle (hornpipe), from the box player John Williams, and Sligo Creek (reel) which we got from John Whelan (who turned out to be one of our judges!)
Thank you all very much for your comments, it's always nice to know that your music is appreciated.

Hey, one more Detroit Grupa member here.
