Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Hadn`t spoken to him in 20 years and he rushed over to shake my hand .what a lovely man! Can`t believe all the nasty comments I have read about him in the past 6 months on this site.He is totally dedicated to the promotion of Irish music and culture and has a good word for everyone as well as being a devout Catholic.Told me all about his new recording project with Dave Bulmer who was with him.-More power to you Seamus! you are right about the begrudgers!

Was he flat?

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Seamus is an eccentric - that's the whole point of him. He can be as nice as ninepence one minute then off his trolley the next.

Remember this is a man who goes to sessions with his Sam Brown Belt and Broad Black Brimmer on!

I have had a few sessions with Seamus and he is a stonking player. He can also be a very generous man with his playing and certainly has encouraged other, younger, players.

While his playing is not as good as it once was he is still up there as far as I am concerned. At his peak there was none to compare with his leppin style of playing.

I'm not sure his being a devout catholic has anything to do with anything mind you. Remember that he claimed to be on the run from the Gardaí after stabbing some character in Sligo!!

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

You sure about the stabbing, breandan? I heard he was on the run (hence living in the North) because he was caught making poitín.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

I heard he was running from a bull he mistook for a milk cow.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Nah, Jack, that wasn't Seamus Tansey... that was me!

Don't worry though, people are always confusing me and ol' Seamus. I like to think it's because we both play flute.

I shall now write a free verse poem about cows.

How now brown cow?
Have you seen my car?
It was here a minute ago.
With its nice windshield.
But it's gone now.
Gone.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

That's funny, I heard he was on the run at one stage from the security forces on both sides of the border for activities related to his political views.
But that's his own business. He's one of the finest musicians there is and was very courteous and helpful to us when we called on him many years ago in Gurteen.
He was the village postman and lived with his mother, before the days of the Broad Black Brimmer and the Sam brown belt.
He definately had a streak of the madness in him, though, which no doubt accounts for his erratic behaviour.
Those were the days when Junior Davey was beginning to get a local reputation for bodhrán making.
There were also a couple of local flute players who were up there with Tansey in terms of quality of playing. Their names were James Murray and Edmund Walsh. I never heard of them again and have often wondered if they are still playing.
Some of the Sligo contingent may know.
Mike.

Matty, I'm so disappointed that a reference to tipping was not made.

I didn't want to upset Tish again.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

The letter incident was a face saving thing due to an incident that impugned his musical prowess. It was an ugly letter plus he approved of it going public. I hope it is something he may feel remorse about in the future. We all probably have an ugly letter or two in our life experiences.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Danny - given the nature of the man I am sure there are probably several stories. But it was rumoured around here that he stabbed a fellow postie with a penknife and fled North to escape the wrath of the guards.

To my knowledge Seamus has never been involved in anything more serious than fluteplaying with his coterie of complete feckin eejits playing drums and guitars whilst wearing the aforementioned military raiment.

This does not detract in any way from his musical genius. When I were a lad he was my joint flute hero along with Cathal Mc Connell.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

So you're that "Q" dude from Star Trek that kept bugging Jean Luc Picard. How's Jean doing? Does he still play tinwhistle? Do any sessions with him lately?
Fecking Eejits? Hasn't that band name already been used?
Jim: If I could be so lucky to have St Peter only mention ugly letters, e-mails and posts! Reminds me - we need a retract button here.

Don't forget an apology button next to the retract button.

James Murray (another postman) is still playing.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

James Murray is on this CD "The Mountain Road," south Sligo musicians. Ever one of them on there is a mighty toot! Gregory Daly, Harry McGowan, James McDonagh, and so on. It's my favorite style of Irish music as it happens so all the better.
I'm thinking that these local compilations will be what I'll be snapping up - nice to hear all the variety.
Seamus is a might player too but jeez! Put some Halidol in his pint.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

It is my goal to be Seamus Tansey of the pipes -- brilliant, but CRAZY. :)

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Thanks kkrell and Kevin for the information on James Murray.
I´m going to get The Mountain Road. It seems a really good album to have.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Flute Players of Roscommon (vol. 1, so far) is another fine collection...John Wynne, Catherine McEvoy, and a whole bunch of others, all unaccompanied, exept for a couple of duets.

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Recommend "The Mountain Road". Seamus Tansey AND Dave Bulmer - dangerous company you're keeping there. "cos". !!

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

Tish, she said darkly, there's no such thing as an innocent cow. They're all part of some mad bovine conspiracy to take over the world.

Really.

Bwahahahaha. Cow tipping is humanity's only chance!

Re: Met Seamus Tansey at Mass last night!

I meet him regularly, in fact herecently wrote me a long account of the alleged stabbing.

Ignore his comments just listen to his music and tell the world of his genius.
