I see several folks on the Mighty Craic are in bands of one kind or another. Who else here is part of a "serious" (albeit part-time) band based on traditional music and song?
What's the band name? (II'll keep it secret so no-one steals it)
What do the band members play?
Are you in big demand?
we look for and fight for demand. we play tonight at a pub called Molly Malone. If all is right we are going to play there first fryday of aevery month.
You'll find the link in my profile. I've been with the band for two years now. What I like about them is that the other members are serious enough about the music to keep the group going in its 12th year despite demanding jobs, voluntary work, family etc. As we rarely play for money but nearly always for a good cause there is more demand than we can keep up with, being the only "Irish" group within a 20-mile radius. As far as we know, anyway.
I wouldn't claim that we "know " the music. We do know lots of songs and a few tunes.
My band is "The Flying Chaucers" and we have been going a long time as you can see from our website. We have a FREE gig at The Oval Tavern, Oval Rd, Croydon, UK on Sunday 22nd May (5 - 8pm). I also play and do the Calling for ceili dances with various other bands too.
A Saturday night off is luxury these days !

The Finian McCoy Garage Band
Whistles, bouzouki, bodhran, vocals.acoustic & electric guitars
Do a some traditional stuff along with Gaelic Storm, Dubliners, Great Big Sea, Bare Naked Ladies, Green Day and original compositions
Started as a church band doing worship music by Robin Mark, now play out a little mostly at benefits and fundraisers, have been 'bought & paid for' at silent auction fundraisers
Venues: Ceilis, coffee houses, pubs, outdoor festivals, weddings, parties. A couple of sessions, incluing a slow session we started aimed at getting kids interested in the music.
Demand: Strong enough to annoy our spouses. We aim for two decent paying jobs a month but often do more. Plus the sessions and a weekly rehearsal.
We play for charities only as most of us have day jobs and do it for fun.
The instruments are fiddles, concertinas, melodeon, piano accordian, bouzouzkis, trombone, bass guitar, acoustic guitars, flutes, low whistle and bodhran. There aren't many of us, but we nearly all play at least one instrument.

Re: Forming a band when you DO know the music
Easy Folk, Spinter, Fergus, Gorton Tank, The Goodfellas (I was Joe pesci type) "Not that that Matters" (there is a stoy there) Spailpéin, Rarin' to Go, and my own favourite name "The Knucklemen". Brian McNeill might remember them.
All of these are names of groups I have been with, and a lot of them are the same group. The new name is "One step ahead of the Taxman".

I think the double RR probably saves us - Three of the band have the surname Tarrant so we altered Tarantella to Tarrantella.
