ive searched the archives and dint find what i was looking for so...i need a mandolin within the $150-300 dollar range(im pretty flexible with this-i dont need the highest quality but somethin to get the job done at gigs), and it has to have pickups so i can plug into an amp and such. i jus need to know what names are good for mandlin as i have no idea and if theres a good shop in the NYC/tri-state area ill check it out.
Goodness knows what is available in NYC. There's a few good servicable instruments in that price range but the best idea is to actually try a few out in the stores.
Alternatively, why not pay a visit to E-bay. You might get a bargain.
Take a look at www.folkofthewood.com and mandolincafe.com there are informations about mandolins and related stuff. Perhaps there you'll find something interesting.
By the way, a trip to Mandolin Bros. is definately worth the effort of going to Staten Island. Whenever I'm there I have hard time making myself leave. It is one of the premier shops in the world.
My biggest problem though is always wanting to spend about a quarter mil while I'm there. I'm not exagerating. Check out the '57 D'Angelico mandolin. Probably my dream mando. I wouldn't kill for it, but I might bust a kneecap or three. $25,000. That would make it one of their mid priced instruments.
For instruments deep in your price range the next time you're in the city for a session head over to E. 48th and Manny's Music or Sam Ash, same owner, next door to each other. Lot's of sub $300 mandos, although I don't know what they might have in the acoustic/electric area. Ya can always pick the one you like and then have the electrics installed.
You are asking a lot for $150-$300, but if you look at a Crafter on ebay you might find what you want. Granted, they would not be very useful for bluegrass and aucoustically they sound like a cheap guitar, but they are fairly easy to play and need little setup unlike a lot of Asian mandolins. I liked the ones that I saw even though I am VERY disposed towards top end mandolins.
I had a folk of the wood octave mandolin and it was a reasonably priced, decent instrument. I think playing instruments before buying and buying local might be the best advice.

Re: mandolin
Ozark semi-accoustic. About $200 but then you talk them down. Look like minature guitars, but sound lovely when plugged in.

Try one of these Mid Missour mandolins. Though they're a bit north of your stated price range...

Re: mandolin
Right now the classifieds on mandolincafe.com show at least a couple of instruments in your price range, with built-in pickups.
Good luck,
