I already started a thread on Danu's new album that should be released today. They have a DVD that was just released. Go to the thread to get opinions about this band. All so far have been very positive. If you like Scottish Traditional Music, Old Blind Dog is due for a new release soon. No date has been given. Only one musician is left from the old group, Johnny Hardy. He is a great fiddle player. The new group includes lively percussion and a great piper.
Hopefully, I'll be able to purchase the new Danu album directly from the band on Saturday when they play at Girvan.
I hope that I don't make anyone jealous.
"Old Blind Dog is due for a new release soon. No date has been given. Only one musician is left from the old group, Johnny Hardy. He is a great fiddle player."
Wow, that's a huge change! Amazing! We saw them last summer and they were wonderful.
Try this link for info on the current band members: http://www.oldblinddogs.co.uk/lineup.asp
I did hear of an album with one guy dubbed over for several instruments for all of the tracks. However, Johnny Hardie (spelled it right this time) is not the only band member now. I still love his excellent fiddle playing. Rory Campbell is great on pipes and whistle. Jim Malcolm is great on vocals and has his own albums out. The "Fit" album was the first for the new group. The old, original group included Buzzbee McMillen (got his name right this time?), who had a unique style of playing Cittern for much of what the group did. Ian F. Benzie did great vocals with an Aberdeenian accent and guitar support. Try some Karoake with the albums - it great fun. Davey Cavanagh took the group to a new level of lively music with his percussion (including hand drumming). I have really enjoyed the style of very lively Scottish Traditional Music this and other bands such as Capercaille have established. "Close to the Bone" and "Live" are my two favorite albums for the old group.
I was quite pleased with the newest Altan album, Local Ground. A nice return to their core sound, without the overabundance of guest appearances that have been cluttering up so many traditional albums lately.
And the new Sharon Shannon album, Tunes, is quite good. The Tunes album is billed as a return to her traditional roots, but let me warn you--it doesn't sound like your local session, unless there is a funky bass player and world-beat percussionist lurking behind the other musicians. Very nice to listen to unless you are a real purist.
Like many others, I am looking forward to the new Danu album.
AlBrown: I am fixated on Local Ground since it came out and it is now my favorite CD. Diatha Sproule (guitar) has played with Altan before, but hasn't been a "regular." Jim Higgins (bodhran) has also played with Altan before, but hasn't been a regular. When all of the regulars and non regulars are together, they are awesome.
CeolCairdeas,
Jim Higgens has played on every Altan album since Blackwater in 1996, i.e. every album since Frankie died. However, he is not a member of the group, although he should be. He sat in with Altan during their second set at a Nashville, Tennessee show a couple of years ago and was phenominal.
Also, Dáithí has been a regular member since 1993's Angel Island. He explained to me that he does the American tours and Mark Kelly does the British tours. I don't know how they divide up the rest of the world.
Barry Kerr (flute) is almost completed a new album, consisting of mainly songs, most of which he has written himself. A step in a different direction for him, but still playing great flute & pipes. Check out a few of his songs on the new Karan Casey album - Chasing the Sun.
we recorded a few sets of tunes. He hasnt decided whether to put them down on the album or not. might not fit in with the feel of the album if you know what i mean. Barry talks a lot about his time in st Louis. Ive heard manys a story!
Here's an old, cheap album almost no one knows about anymore. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000058KS/qid%3D1114611629/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-8805214-5707025
It is a collection of stuff I would estimate as1980's stuff, but look at the names starting with Kevin Burke. Who is Gerold Trimble? This is one of my favorite bouzouki tracks. Then there is Eileen Ivers back before she went middle of the road and the off roading. One of my all time favorite bodhran tracks by Johnny "Ringo" McDonagh. I'm sure Bliss will respond with I could do that, but it highlights how much expression Johnny could get with a relaxed style. There is an excellent melodean track, excellent flute track and there is an excellent tenor banjo track. For two bucks, for alot less in Euro standard, you can't miss.
LaraKerr: Interesting to hear Barry Kerr's name mentioned. I once asked someone (I think it was Turlach Boylan) for names of flute players to listen to, and Barry Kerr was on the list. But I've not run into information about a recording by him. Could you tell me about it.
Oh, and to add to the thread, Paddy O'Brien tells me that Chulrua is hoping to be finish recording for a new album in early May. Not sure how long after that til it's ready to release.
This will be the first Chulrua CD with Patrick Orceau as a member. While I'll miss Tim Britton's piping, I can't get enough of Patrique's delicious style!
Ceol Cairdeas,
I have the CD you mentioned and bought Gerald Trimble's "First Flight" CD after hearing the track. You can order it from http://www.geraldtrimble.com and I highly recommend it.

Paul O Shaughnessy & Harry Bradley - Born For Sport is the best new album i've heard for a while. flute & fiddle at its best.
