Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

Hello all,

I noticed in David Lyth Vol. 2 that a Sean Ryan LP was reissued on CD in 1996 by Outlet records and that another was scheduled for release the next year. I googled Outlet but didn't find a site. Is Outlet out of business? Anyone know if those recordings are still available? I am interested in finding any other recordings by Sean Ryan as well.

Thanks

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

A relative of my nanny back in Portarlington Offaly. I remember when I was a child, I used to visit her and Sean Ryan used to pop in to see her.

He lived across the road.

She had some fine recordings of him and Paddy O Brien where they are I don't know when I go to Offaly this year I am going to make it my duty to find them.

R.I.P nanny and Sean Ryan

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

I'll be talking to my mum tonight who is from there too I'll ask her. we would be more near the cloneyhurke/cloneygowan side. what a small world.

my mum went to school with sean ryans kids she goes to visit them every summer, bessie ryan i think one of the daughters or could be his widow still has one of his fiddles.

There is a lovely monument for sean in newtown tipperary where he and my family were orginally from

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

Outlet Records... I heard about their demise. Not a happy tale. Bill McBurney used to live across the road from us....

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

well I will ask my mam tonight if she has any old recordings or what my nanny did with the ones she had and I will email you or put further comments on here tomorrow.

I think Paddy Ryan from Roscommon has some really old archives of Sean Ryans playing.

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

I have one track of Sean Ryan playing one of his own tunes (The Dash to Portobello), on a compilation of Irish music from the 78 era. Beautiful fiddling - it sounds like something bubbling out of a bog.

MusicMad - I hope you find those recordings. I don't care whether you distribute them for nothing or make a million out of them and buy yourself a 120" telly, I've got to hear them.

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

Hmm. I tried Wren (I got a site called "Sounds Irish") but no luck. And I've hit up Ossian several times already and gotten loads of CDs as well as some great cassettes for CDs that are out of print, but no Sean Ryan there either.

I've only heard a few of his many compositions but those that I have heard I like very much. But I could always get my hands on one of his tunebooks if I wanted the tunes. I am more interested in his playing, also of tunes not of his own composition.

Conan (sorry about the fada, I am on a Microsoft OS and am lost exiled from my Mac), I don't know anything about Outlet. Was McBurney associated with the label?

Quirl, I also heard The Dash to Portobello from the Seotai Seidte CD. The same recording is on the Milestone compilation, but titled Port-Gael-Linn. There the recording is reproduced at a different speed and therefore a different pitch (a tone up). I think the SS version is slowed down a bit, I have some of Denis Murphy's recordings on that CD on other discs too and the SS pitch is lower for them as well. I seem to recall there's something in the liner notes about the speeds not all being accurate on SS. Anyway, at whatever speed or pitch, that's the only recording I've heard of Sean's actual playing & I think it's lovely. Musicmad, I would love to hear those recordings but they are really more than I was hoping for. I am not that ambitious! As much as I would love to hear private recordings I think I'd be satisfied just to hear ones reissued commercially as recently as last decade! It's amazing to me that it's so difficult to get recordings of the great older generation fiddlers from Munster.

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

well I am going back to Cloneyhurke in 2 weeks and I am going to do some research see who has them in the family. If I find them I will post a discussion on here.

Fingers crossed.

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

Hey musicmad, I'd love to hear those recordings too! My father is from Tulamore and my uncle Mickey used to play tunes with Sean. I've explored more of my sligo side, but should look into more of the offally background. My brother got a whole rake of dots from my uncle, but no recorded music.

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

Hi, “2ndfiddle” – I have 2 tracks from the Sean Ryan Trio LP “Back Home To The Cliffs Of Mohir” on 2 “Outlet” compilation albums, but I gave up trying to find the original recording years ago. I hadn’t known it had been re-released on CD. Your mentioning it led me to try a “Google” search for “sean – ryan – and cliffs”. I managed to track down an internet music shop called “101cd.com” who claimed to have it in stock.
It’s very weird, because it seems to be one of very few Irish traditional recordings they have, but nevertheless, I ordered a copy for myself yesterday. Whether or not they are reliable remains to be seen.
I’ve checked the progress on the order today, and they say that it’s “on order with the supplier”. I’d assumed they had it physically in stock, but that apparently not being the case, I won’t be surprised if they turn around and say they can’t get it after all. I’ll let you know how it turns out in case you might want a copy for yourself, but my advice would be don’t do anything in the meantime.
Sean Ryan appears on the “Coming West Along The Road” video recording. Maybe a bit much to pay for 1 track, but there’s a lot of good stuff on that video, and I’d recommend it. It may even be available on DVD these days.
Finally, I have an old recording on cassette tape of Sean Ryan playing along with Galway flute-player P.J.Moloney. I can’t remember who gave it to me, and the quality is not great. I had a look through the “Discography” in Hammy Hamilton’s flute book, and think it might be a recording of an LP entitled “Traditional Music Of Ireland”, which was recorded in 1960 on the American “Avoca” label. He also appears to have made a record with [ uilleann piper ? ]Peter Carberry on the same label.
Hope this may be of interest, - I’ll let you know if the CD turns up or not.

Re: Sean Ryan (fiddle)/Outlet Records question

Thanks Kenny. I should definitely get a copy of "Come West," I've been meaning to for some time. I wonder if Ossian or Celticgrooves has it in U.S. format.

I have heard of recordings on the Avoca label before, but it appears to have been defunct for decades. I wonder what happend to their catalogue.... In any case, its crown jewels indeed appear to be:

33-AV 121 Seán Ryan & P.J. Maloney – Traditional Music of Ireland, Vol.1

33-AV 134 Seán Ryan & Peter Carberry – Traditional Music of Ireland, Vol.2

I'd love to hear a copy of the Avoca tape or the Outlet tracks.
