Arie de Keyser

Re: Arie de Keyser

I played a DeKeyze flute once. I wasn't terribly impressed, but then again, it was in rough shape. I think the workmanship of other modern makers is better, though more expensive. But, I have heard of others finding DeKeyzers that were pretty good, so if you can choose from a selection, you might find a really nice one.
There are flutes being made with more rectangular embouchure holes. The old elliptical embouchure is a bit noisy and unresponsive to some. I like a boxed oval or a elliptical embouchure that's more undercut than some. Paddy Ward does a nice undercut ellipse which removes some of the drawbacks of the trad. oval. Terry McGee offers an improved elliptical embouchure as well as boxed oval and rounded rectangular holes.
BTW, I have heard some say that their not sure if DeKeyzer seasons his wood as much as other makers. That can be important.

Re: Arie de Keyser

I have seen a wooden piccolo (Bohem style) with a square embochure hole before.

Re: Arie de Keyser

Finding the right flute can be like finding the right girl to kiss. Your lips match up with some better than others. (Don't take anything Jack says seriously right now, he's just after drinking 5 gin & tonics) *hic*

"so , Jack , could we have a scale , like , to measure this stuff with ." - Jim Troy

To have a scale as to measure embouchure hole to lip ratios as per my allegory would require extensive field research. Even though I would enjoy the assignment, I think my wife would object most unreservedly if I engaged in the endeavor I'm afraid -- so you're on your own.

Re: Arie de Keyser

Hey, I play one of Arie's keyless blackwood flutes and I'm quite happy with it.

It's good value for money if you're at the beginning of your learning curve.

Re: Arie de Keyser

I have a de keyser flute, not my main one I play a seery. I don't like the de keyser flute that much at all to be honest with you.

Re: Arie de Keyser

well, not exactly an irish flute but... I play a flemish bagpipe (doedelzak) made by him and I'm very happy. Nice sound, well tuned, 2 octaves.... great.

Re: Arie de Keyser

I know it is a while since this discussion but I have just bought a bee-ooo-tiful Arie de Keyser flute in Dublin on my travels. Strong low sound. Yes I am an absolute beginner but it felt and sounded so good straight off (having shopped around for a while) and I am steadily getting nicer sounds.

Thank you Arie!
