90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
Hey folks... first post here... love the website...
I've been passed along a recording of Kevin Crawford at a session in Galway... I think it was recorded sometime in the 90s.
Well, I'm learning the tunes off of it and I'm spotty on the names...
Has someone come up with a list of the tune names or would someone be willing to come up with a list... I did a search and found that someone on the board refered to it as the GORT recording with Kevin Crawford and Tony Linnane... I'm not sure if this is the same one.
Re: 90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
Any chance you could put it into MP3 and email it to anyone that wants to assist? (Of course, it's the ones I *don't* know that I'd be really interested in).
Re: 90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
It's pretty long.. I'd say an hours worth... All the tunes are killer... All reels..not one single jig... (I happen to enjoy jigs...)
Let's see if anyone else has this recording and has given it some thought... I'm workingo on piecing it together myself so if I finally do I'll list the tunes.
Re: 90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
Scrutinize the sleeve notes of his album "In Good Company." That includes the most detailed and comprehensive biography and discography of Kevin. Maybe you'll get a clue.
Re: 90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
This is the GORT Session. This wouldn't be part of one of Kevin's "official" recordings as would be mentioned in "In Good Company"... I have found some of the names by listening to Kevin's other recordings however... that has been helpful... 'Cause one tends to play the tunes one plays!
But yep.. I just noticed that this was the Galway GORT session... Some type A person like myself must have written down all the tune names no?
Anyway... If I ever run into Kevin I'll have to ask him if I can put it up on our media player over at whistle & drum...
Re: 90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
try looking for some rcordings of Kevin when he was playing with Mick Coneely in Birmingham England in a band called 'Longacre'. That was an incredible band and kevin had an English accent then, well, his real Birmingham west midlands accent.
I remember they used to play tunes they had learnt from a fiddle player called Pat Mallo, anyone know him?
Thanks to friends of blayne along Colorado's Front Range, I too have a copy of this. On mine, the tunes are split out of their sets, but still in the same order. Here's a "track list," as best as I've been able to identify the tunes. Nearly all these tunes are in the database here, many posted by Kenny.
1. Jim Donoghue’s
2. Martin Wynne’s #1
3. Martin Wynne’s #2
4. Musical Priest

Re: 90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
Curious, Will. I reckon I've posted about a quarter of the tunes from that session here, and it's not a recording I've ever heard.
See tunes #6 & #7. You might remember the prolonged debate about identifying the "mystery" reel by "Danu", and I pointed out that it had been recorded, along with "Martin Wynne's #3", by Kevin Crawford and a banjo player from Galway. Is that tune #6, [ called "Sean Ryan's" here ], Josie Keegan's composition, the "Aughacashel" ?
As I dug into the tune database here unearthing tunes from the Gort session recording, it was freaky how often your name came up as the poster. I began to suspect you were transcribing directly from the tape. But in most cases the Gort versions are slightly different from what you've posted, and not always for the better.
Re: 90s Session Recording with Kevin Crawford - Tune Names?
I got a copy of the Gort tape in the form a burned CD that a friend gave me a few years ago. I think the version that was passed on to me is slightly longer than what other people have, and so I had to research some tune names that were not discussed above. All tunes are reels except #13 which is a jig set.
Here's a list of the tracks that I have:
1. Jim Donoghue's
2. The Aughacashel / Martin Wynne's #3 / The Ivy Leaf
3. The New Policeman / The Stony Steps / The Humours of Lissadell / Cooley's / The Green Mountain
4. Limestone Rock / The Humours of Loughrea / Coleman's Cross / Paddy Mills' Fancy
5. The Cap and Bell / The Maids in the Meadow
6. Tuttle's / The Donegal Tinker
7. John Watt Henry's / Handsome Sally / The Boys of Portaferry
8. The Noon Lasses / The Crib of Perches
9. Dinny O'Brien's / Toss the Feathers
10. Mick Hand's / The Abbey Reel
11. Smash the Windows
12. The Galway Reel
13. Finbar Dwyer's Favourite / Paddy Fahy's
14. Farewell to Milltown / The Old Road to Garry
15. Jenny's Picking Cockles / The Wise Maid
16. Gerry Commane's / The Gooseberry Bush / Aggie Whyte's
17. Red Tom of the Hills
18. Captain Kelly's / The Daisy Field
Thanks to everyone who helped identify tunes earlier in this discussion, particularly Will Harmon.

It is indeed the Aughacashel--good catch, Kenny. I'll post the Gort version in the comments there (http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/1498) when I can get around to it.
