I'm quite fascinated by the rituals involved in the Papal elections; ie white smoke for agreement and black smoke if no decision has been reached.
Already, some have argued that such a method is no longer "politically correct" in that "black" has negative connotations here!
Anyway, for a bit of fun, we could try the same thing in session pubs which still have open fires. How about "white smoke" for a good going session with the best tunes and crack? Alternatively, "black smoke" if things aren't going so well; eg "Beware bodhrans" or "Ten guitars present"?
Clearly fiddle players playing too fast would produce their own smoke, caused by excessive friction. This would then serve a self-referential function, similar to the sentence, "This sentence is false".
Does the expression "more papal than the pope" exist in English as it does in German? It could be applied to the odd session member at times...
Don't blame me for Benedict - I didn't vote for him
Blasphemy out of Sodom and the other place. Just because the new Pope plays a bodhran.
As a Man City supporter I now smoke cigars. Very handy for doing a "Joey Barton" when people make bodhran jokes beside me. And I am running out of whistles.
Wormdiet, will you change your name to Diet of Worms?
Let's be careful or this thread will go up in smoke very shortly.
And yes, I've only just checked your profile but Swedish music is very interesting. Ben Paley is an exponent over here.
As we were packing up our instruments at the end of the session tonight, our bodhranist from Co Kerry said he was going straight home to drink the health of the new Pope with 16 benedictines. Of course he'll be absolutely stocious afterwards

Well, I for one am very disappointed by the pope's choice of name. Benedict? He could at the very least have continued the legacy of predecessors Pope John and Pope John Paul by calling himself...
Matt, you've killed me. I've never thought of this secret message contained in the pope's name!
Sounds much more credible than St. Malachy's prophecy (his followers didn't take into account that he was Irish, otherwise they would never believed him)
Sounds like another older, traditional Pope. The news here in the U.S. is that water stains in a subway look like the Virgin Mary and the devout see it as a good omen for the new Pope. I am bracing myself for that section of the subway wall to be torn down and be up for sale on eBay for a million dollars.
Slightly off-topic, but if you go to http://www.schneier.com/crypto-gram-0504.html
(a fairly long web page) there is an article towards the end by Bruce Schneier that goes into some detail about the security aspects of the papal election. Basically, he’s saying that it is a manual system that has matured over the centuries and is just about as secure as you can get.
BTW, Bruce Schneier is one of the world's great experts on security matters and cryptography.

Or we could get the smokers to produce it - except in Ireland of course.
