Music In Ennis over the summer

Music In Ennis over the summer

Hello there,

I'm off to ennis at the end of the month for the summer. Where are the best places for tunes.

Any concerts happening?

What are the local musicians like?

Is there many musical tourists visiting ennis over the summer/

Thanks in advance :)

Re: Music In Ennis over the summer

Stop in at Custy's first off. If you want a lesson, they can find you a teacher, and if you want sessions, they'll point you in the right direction for sessions that will suit you. They'll also happily sell you all sorts of stuff. They're right round the corner from Cruise's and the Abbey.

Stay in Abbey Tourist Hostel: http://www.hostelworld.com/hosteldetails.php/AbbeyTouristHostel-Ennis-1027 Have a lovely lunch at Brogan's Bar. Swap some tunes with a couple of amateur players from other parts of the world in the hostel. Go to Custy's with them. Snatch a light meal at Enzo's. And finally head for Cruise's. That's what I do in Ennis.

The live music at Cruise's can be a gig. Still good though. I just know the session on Friday night is very tight with a fiddle, a box, a couple of flutes and a bouzouki. Some of them are well-known. I might be back there in June! Good luck!

The Kilfenora Ceili Band will be putting on a concert in Glor (at the back of Dunnes Car Park) during the Fleadh Nua in May. I went to their gig (which will be in the same format) in the National Concert Hall Dublin and it was one of the best concerts I was ever at. Kieran Hanrahan was MC and there was an excellent Slide Show detailing the history of the band and guests such as Gerry Lynch singing.
You should definitely pop into Paddy Quinns in the market for a few tunes.

Re: Music In Ennis over the summer

Hope you get there from Monday, May 23 onwards for the start of Fleadh Nua. You'll have free lunchtime concerts every day of the week, a session workshop in the Temple Gate Hotel from 4.00 to 5.30 in the afternoons plus various evening events and a nightly Fleadh Club session. All you need is lots of stamina!!

You can't spit in Ennis without hitting a session.

Re: Music In Ennis over the summer

We were in Ennis for a month the summer before last on a house exchange, and could walk to all of the gezillion sessions going on all over. Ennis is a musical mecca, and lthat summer was full of Japanese fiddlers.

I second the vote for an early stop in Custy's - they'll direct you to the sessions, and will tell you which ones are open to out of towners who want to play, if that's what you want. Our favourite listening sessions were at Cruise's around the corner from Custy's. You're only a stone's throw away from Milltown Malbay while you're in Ennis, and it's certainly worth getting into one of their sessions if you can get a ride - when we were there Jackie Daly had one which featured Kevin O'Reilly (Caoimhin O Raghallaigh for the purists) and it was great...or mighty, if you want to get into the venacular a bit early...

Finally, before you head out to the sessions, listen to the traditional music shows on Clare FM, from 7 - 9 each evening, Monday to Friday. They'll also let you know what concerts are going on.

You're going to have a great time! I'm envious!
