Uploading Tunes to the brain, Summer schools and stuff
Uploading Tunes to the brain, Summer schools and stuff
Now that spring has sprung & the grass is riz, thoughts turn to stress-busting summer breaks.
The idea of going to some camp or holiday place and just learning & playing new tunes for a week is becoming strangely irresistible.
I never thought these type of things were for me, but, old age or whatever, now it seems like a great idea. Bliss.
Especially since the Bitter Half is having her own break and the offspring no longer wish to accompany their folks on hols, thus absolving me of the need to Placate Everyone (Else) on my choice of hols.
Any suggestions of where would be good to go in these fair Isles? Web searches haven't really inspired me yet.
Not so much festivals and pissups, I get a few of those anyway.
Places where you GET TAUGHT stuff, for a week. (But can walk to the pub preferably)

Have a look at this, it's a great week, the best of teachers and it's far more intimate than most of the workshops in Ireland, the Uk I've no idea. It's in the Dordogne, Ryanair Stanstead to Bergerac is very cheap and the week will probably cost you a lot less than the UK.
Just an idea......

Sorry, you don't want a list. I regularly visit Boghill Centre in West Clare: http://www.boghill.com I just love the securely isolated place and very relaxed, mixed-instrument workshops. At night you'll drive to neighbouring towns such as Corofin, Kilfenora, Lisdoonvarna, and Ennistymon, and meet and play with great musicians such as Christy Barry, Terry Bingham, Paul Dooley on fiddle, mighty banjo player Siobhan O'Donoghue, etc.

Hi,
I highly recommend "Willie Clancy Summer School" in Milltown Malbay. I was there in 2003 and I'm going this year.
Check their website http://www.setdancingnews.net/wcss/wcsst.htm

Hi
These may be of interest. The amount of irish music varies each year depending on the instrument you play and the tutors they use. I've been to Folkworks weekends and summer school and they are well organised and good fun.
Re: Uploading Tunes to the brain, Summer schools and stuff
There is a direct train route Paris-Perigeux and Bus to Tocane St Apre, It is very easy to cadge a lift to Perigeux for the return journey. The slight drawback is the price of French trains,
not cheap.....
Re: Uploading Tunes to the brain, Summer schools and stuff
Another thought, if you decide to come to France and we are not playing during that time it would be easier to come to La Rochelle from Paris and stay with us overnight. At the moment we have every intention of going to Tocane because we missed it last year for the first time in 6 years. For us it's one of the handful of oportunities to re-meet other singers. There are always musicians and singers who have been teachers in the past who come for a holiday at that time of year.
Anyway don't hesitate to contact me thro' the Session by E-Mail if you decide to come, there are always ways and means of cutting down expenses.

If you can't cross the water, the next best thing is Mary Macnamara at Swaledale Concertinas 20th-22nd May at Grinton Lodge, just past Richmond.

I've been to the South Sligo summer school in Tubbercurry for the last 3 years - the tutors are excellent and there's some great sessions in the evenings. It's on 10 - 16 July.
This year I'm going on to the Joe Mooney summer school in Drumshambo which is on the following week (I'll have the same tutor again and he's probably sick of the sight of me, but he only teaches by ear and each year I get better at learning tunes without relying on the dots).

Thanks folks.
Like the France idea but Aberdeen has no connection with Stansted. What's it like to get to Tocane from Paris?
