can any one suggest an easy to use abc notation program
I have abc notater but there is no help files and to get this to work is a mystery to me (to bring aa abc file into the list and then play it?)
thx

Click on Links on the right and then Categories, ABC Software is the first on the list. Melody Assistant is free to download and try but the full program costs 20 euros, well worth it IMHO.
I use the command-line tool "abcm2ps" which is available from the abcplus site (see Walshaw's page for link). It really doesn't take a Computer Science degree to figure out how to use it. All you need to do is download the .zip file, unzip it (and remember where you put it), then from a DOS window, run
> abcm2ps myabcfile.abc
and you get nice postscript output (for which you need a postscript viewer, but that's free too, somewhere).
I'm sure many folks here (including myself) are savvy enough to coach even the most un-savvy computer user through an install and basic-use session of abcm2ps. Let me know (offline, if you like).

I'm using skink to read, play and print ABC files - seems really good and it's free (donations can be made): http://celticmusic.ca/skink.html
You need to load the Java Runtime software (free from Java.com)
Thanks for all the responses. I will try the various programs to see what works for me. I think my biggest problem was seeing the trees for the forest..
again thanks
Jim
I could not get the player to work because I use a Yamaha UX16 USB interface and route the Midi to a keyboard.
Navigator doesn't like this and just sits there, dumb as dirt.
It does work with sound card midi.

Re: abc programs
What is the task, seammmc? Are you trying to represent tunes you know (or have sheet music for) in abc format?

Re: abc programs
For basic trad work (just melody line) ABC2Win would be hard to beat.

Re: abc programs
ABC2Win seems to have a few problems with Windows XP.
ABC Navigator is a good alternative. See the Links section here for further possibilities.

Re: abc programs
The combination I use for all of these has the advantage of being completely free.
(1) ABC Player (edit and listen to tunes,) available here:
http://www.geocities.com/Nashville/8773/abcplay.htm
(2) Concertina.net's Convert-a-matic (convert abc format to musical notation, and save it as a very nice pdf file,) go here:

Re: abc programs
ABC Navigator 2 works well and is super easy to use.

Re: abc programs
Nav 2 is also a free download.
I too use concertina.net's Convert-a-matic to create nice pdf files of sheet music.

Re: abc programs
What would be a good tool to create a page of tunes, like three tunes to a page? The concertina.net tool just does one tune at a time, right?

Re: abc programs
To make three-to a page, I've used concertina.net to show the PDF on the screen and then done screen captures with Paint Shop Pro.
