Free Websites by Uni.cc

Anyone who has looked at my bio over the last few months will have noticed a number of links to various websites I’ve been running, some of which related specifically to ITM matters.
Jim Dorans has kindly drawn to my attention that when he tried to access those websites a few days ago he was presented with a screen bearing the gnomic message
:19638/webhost/rollout">-->, and further access proved impossible.
For a number of reasons, I hadn’t been checking into my sites for a while so I hadn’t noticed that anything had gone wrong. The websites were hosted by http://www.uni.cc and attempts to access that website also resulted in the same gnomic message. I feared my websites may have vanished for ever, so I have now removed the links from my bio.
Last year, I saw a mention by someone on The Session that uni.cc was starting hosting facilities for free, very basic, and very easy to use websites - text only and no more than 200k (about 6 pages) of data per site. I set up a few which I found very useful for deseminating general information and news bulletins about sessions and ITM in Bristol, as well as some other things. Fortunately, I realised that “free” web facilities can be at the price of being withdrawn at short notice, so I made sure that important stuff was backed up. Unfortunately, it seems that uni.cc gave no prior notice of pulling their facilities – a simple email to their customers would have sufficed – so I wonder if other people have been left in a more embarrassing position than me.
I’ve fed said gnomic message into Google and came up with several hundred recent webpages discussing the issue. Life being short, I looked at only a few. Most of it seemed very technical and quite beyond me, but I gathered that (a) this seems to have happened quite recently, (b) uni.cc have either pulled out completely, in which case hundreds of personal websites have evaporated into the ether; or they’re doing a massive restructuring, in which case they “may” reappear - but my bet is that the personal websites will have disappeared for good.
If anyone has further information as to what’s going on I’d be very grateful.
BTW, I intended this thread to appear on March 31, but in my view the Irish Tales by Eddie Lenihan had a higher priority.

And as far as being embarassed is concerned, one of my sites was the event calendar for a good friend's comedy theatre. I gave the address out to dozens of potential audience members. Siiiiiiiiigh.

Re: Free Websites by Uni.cc

Mine has gone too but fortunately I only used it to point to another site, it's a pity cause it was a neat address and easy to remember.

Re: Free Websites by Uni.cc

I seeeee. What's DNS?

Re: Free Websites by Uni.cc

DNS server - This kind of server maps TCP/IP numbers, such as 123.12.4.245 (your PC's network address), to a more easily remembered name, such as www.geek.com. Thus, when you type www.geek.com into your browser, it goes out to the DNS server specified by your ISP and asks for a matching TCP/IP address. If the browser finds a DNS entry for the name you typed in, you see the appropriate website. If not, it lets you know. Every domain name that is actually being used for a website has a corresponding TCP/IP address. When you set up a site you have your ISP add a DNS entry to its DNS servers (or manage it yourself). This entry gets replicated across the Internet in a matter of hours, and, once fully replicated, you can reach your website from any Internet connection.

Yes, and they are all using DNS.

Re: Free Websites by Uni.cc

As I don't know much about how uni.cc looks on their end of the organisation, I can't comment on that. I only have what is being said in the thread hoping that perhaps those folks have a little more knowledge of uni's setup. No harm in waiting to see if there are actually upgrade being done... it's just too bad they don't communicate with their clients. Perhaps they feel they don't owe them that.

Re: Free Websites by Uni.cc

Good news re Uni.cc. Their website has resurfaced, and the homepage gives two important items of information, as follows:
1. After a long downtime we're back. Our previous Internet hosting service provider, one of the most biggest Internet companies, has been unable to host UNI.CC sites. We moved and have now new and more powerful dedicated servers that will help us to provide the service quality you allways expected from us. The domain registry will work at its full power during the following days.
2. The Domain Control Panel has been temporarily closed due to maintenance tasks that are being performed. Please try visiting this page later. We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.
The second item means that members cannot yet login to their websites, but, hopefully, it looks as if this will happen in the not too distant future. I now feel a little more optimistic.

Re: Free Websites by Uni.cc

Hi Trevor,
infrequent visitor to this site though I am - popping in for the odd tune-plunder - I run a couple of servers in work and would be happy to mirror your Bristol info web pages for you (I'm the Kate who turns up now and again in Avonmouth, was dancing at Croscombe yesterday, and owns the Incredibow, if that narrows me down!). Drop me a line or I'll catch up with you at Avonmouth or in the Plume of Feathers.

Re: Free Websites by Uni.cc

Yay. My sites are back. I'm so delighted. Can't update them though. That's really too bad, since they're calendars.
