word is with sean keane reluctant to tour as he ages, the chieftains are asking dublin fiddler liam o connor and baltimore fiddler jesse smith to join. good choice?
Sounds like Martin Fay and Seane Keane are being replaced? I believe Martin is the oldest of the group. I don't know the new fiddlers, but I think the death of Derek Bell may be stimulating some decisions about their busy touring schedule. That means Paddy , Matt and Kevin will be the remaining members of the old group. :^) (^:
Bell was replaced by Triona Marshall. She's been touring with them for the last two years at least. And as of a couple months ago, Seán was still with them as well. I would think he'd at least finish out this year's tour, but one never can know for certain.
"In response to speculation that the band would eventually replace Fay and Bell, Moloney was fairly emphatic. "I think we have a very strong quartet and will keep it that way. We're just going to have guests from here on."
On the present U.S. tour the band has the two Núñez brothers, the two Pilatzke brothers, and Laois-born harper Tríona Marshall. "
Dave Burland at Cambridge Folk Festival some years ago - "Do you know that, statistically, six of you in the crowd here will play in Fairport Convention in the next ten years ?".

Re: new chieftain members
Martin Fay hasn't toured with the band in several years (5 maybe?) although I understand he does play when they present shows in Ireland.
It's got to be a brutal schedule, with all the dates on their schedule. I'd bet they'd put up an argument to the "it's a small world" sentiment.

Re: new chieftain members
Brian, I was fortunate to see the Feelgoods when only Wilko had left and Gypie Mayo was pretty good value anyway.
I would think anything put together by Paddy Moloney with Chieftains' arrangements and similar musical mix would be a fair sell though.

Re: new chieftain members
As to the "no original members left", the Chieftains original member lineup was:
Seán Potts - whistle
Michael Tubridy - flute
Paddy Maloney - pipes/whistle
David Fallon - bodhran
Martin Fay - fiddle
Out of the "original" members, only one is remaining.

Re: new chieftain members
Well, I know Jesse Smith is good. He was in Danu for a while, I think he's Donna Long's son. He seems so young to be a Chieftain, though!

Re: new chieftain members
Well, for being "guests", the bros. and Triona seem to have become fixtures over the past years....
At any rate, they're still worth seeing...
