Re: Paddy Molloney

Tracks 10-12 on "The Drones and Chanters" (a must-have CD for pipers) is Paddy Moloney's. That CD is a treasure: Seamus Ennis, Peadar Broe, Leo Rowsome, Paddy Moloney, Dan Dowd, Tommy Reck and Willie Clancy plays the tunes. There are many top pipers. Hard to pick the best piper: all are best :)

Re: Paddy Molloney

As far as I know, Paddy Moloney doesn't have solo Uilleann pipe recording. Consequently, when Uilleann pipers talk about great pipers, a lot of other names will be mentioned before Paddy's. I would be hard pressed to proclaim any one piper as the best in the world.

Re: Paddy Molloney

I also hesitate to make "best" musicians of any type, as it does not advance the cause of the music. There are many excellent pipers, and it is no special effort to appreciate all of them.

Have you seen the "Water from the Well" DVD? Paddy is interviewed in depth. Jam sessions at Matt's pub, in Kilfinora with Tommy Peoples, in Dingle and in Donnegal with Altan are highlights. He treats everyone to his life story and specific sites where he grew up and learned music, including his grandparent's farm. He does a great solo Tinwhistle tune, the Ballyfin Slide. He talks about his teacher and learning how to play the Uilleann pipes. You see the shed where his uncle practiced pipes on rainy days to not drive the family nuts. I think that was his first connection to the pipes. If you are a Paddy fan, this would be a memorable DVD. Best Wishes.

Re: Paddy Molloney

So, all pipers are best.Ok.:)
But isimply seems, that Paddy played in another style, than other pipers. He complete use an opportunitys of his pipes, he don't subordinate his imagination to the construction of instrument. So i think.

Thank you for information about records!

Re: Paddy Molloney

Don't you think Paddy looks a lot like Spock with plastic surgery on the ears and an Irish accent? I've heard that Ireland was a popular retirement spot, but isn't the whole scene a bit unstructured for Vulcans?

Re: Paddy Molloney

Welcome to the “Session”, Sandy. Do not worry – you are not stupid. The English language can be difficult to understand. “Gzeg” was just making a joke about how Paddy Moloney looks.
“Padraig” was saying that the way in which you described Paddy Moloney’s style of playing could also be used to describe Paddy Keenan, another Irish piper. Paddy Moloney has not recorded a CD of his piping on his own, yet, but there were rumours that he was intending to make a solo recording, and had started recording some tracks.

Re: Paddy Molloney

He recorded a great tin whistle album with Sean Potts.

Re: Paddy Molloney

I think Paddy Moloney plays so if you play with him, you sounds better than if you play, for example, with Paddy Keenan.

I've listened a lot of irish music, and a lot of irish pipers, but what PM has done (and is going to do...) noone has done it before.

Paddy Keenan can play uilleann pipes faster, burning the chanter. Liam O'Flynn have a wonderful taste to play beautiful tunes, but Paddy Moloney... He is unique!!! He os... himself.
