Mandolin Albums

Mandolin Albums

I posted a discussion a few days ago asking about where I could get my hands on the Louis McManus album. It seems very difficult so can you lot come up with some other, easier to get hold of mandolin albums, please.
I'm looking for Irish, Scottish, English music over Bluegrass sort of stuff but I'm up for anything.
Cheers all.

Re: Mandolin Albums

I found this one : http://www.louismcmanus.com/getcd.html - when you click on the ''Across the Borders' link you get this : http://www.acrosstheborders.com.au/cd_shop/artist_listing.htm - click on the 'Across the Borders' picture at the bottom right, then click on "With a Heart and a Hand ", then click 'buy online'....

Re: Mandolin Albums

Try Dagger Gordon, Kevin McLeod for Scotish music. Paul Kelly, Mick Moloney for Irish.

Simon Mayor is great too, of course, but not specifically one genre or another. Very versatile.

Re: Mandolin Albums

Some of the best Irish tune settings for mandolin are on Mick Moloney's album "Strings Attached".

Re: Mandolin Albums

If you are looking for rare albums, my best luck has been the recording label web site or specific used CD sites.

You said cross over bluegrass was O.K. Chris Tyle of Nickel Creek is phenomenal on mandoline. They got a grammy for the album "Nickle Creek." They do a few self composed and arranged tunes and a few cross over trad tunes (Cuckoo's Nest is one of my favorites). They have one called simply "Fox" which would definitely be appropriate for our Brit friends after the ban on fox hunting. Best Wishes.

Re: Mandolin Albums

One of my favourite albums is Rocky Road by Michael Kerry a mix of Irtrad and originals, just mandolin and guitar. Beautiful stuff.

Re: Mandolin Albums

Declan Corey plays with Lia Luachra and Josephine Marsh Band. A must hear!

"i can hear you smiling" by marsh is a great mandolin album, as Declan plays alot solo and up front.

try www.mandolincafe.com/mp3 for more sources for mandomusic.

Re: Mandolin Albums

Roger Landes is mostly a 'zouk player, but he plays melody and also does get in some mando on his solo album, Dragon Reels: http://www.celticmusic.com/roger_landes/dragon_reels.shtml

Aidan Crossey posts to this group. He's too modest to suggest himself, so I will. Check him out here:
http://www.paythereckoning.com/humours2.htm

I recently turned up "The Bedlam Guys" on a similar hunt myself. Their stuff is a little Ren-fest stuff for some, but it is amazing. Check them out here:
http://www.bedlamboys.net/
I especially like "The Tree They Do Grow High." You can get it as a free MP3 here: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/1/bedlamirishmusic.htm

Some folks have suggested Shooglenifty. They are not Irtrad, by any means, but very talented nonetheless and Luke Plumb seems pretty amazing. Here is a like to the band website:
http://www.shoogle.com/
Here's a recent interview with Luke:http://www.mandolin.org.uk/interviews/lukeplumb.php

Dan Beimborn (a croney of Roger Landes, I think) recently released an album as well, called Shatter the Calm. Here is a link to it:
http://www.celticmusic.com/dan/
You can get a couple highly cool MPEGs of Dan playing from his site as well.

I like Simon Mayor for purely technical reasons. His album The New Celtic Mandolin is a bit esoteric to my ear, however. That said, his kids stuff (also featuring mando) are wonderful!

BTW, if you find the Mick Maloney and Paul Kelly's stuff where you can order it reliably over the web, let me know. I've been looking. I found a place or two but I wasn't sure how reputable the sites were.

I have Springwell by Kevin Macleod. It's pretty good but, again, a little esoteric in some places. I bought Dagger Gordon's "The Frozen River" while in Edinborough some time back. I got the CD back to the states, I found that the contents of the CD case were his first album, HIghland Mandolin.

I second Ceol Cairdeas' comments on Chris Thile and Nickel Creek. Great stuff. His solo stuff is a bit self-indulgent, imo (or you can say "over my head" -- I'm fine with that). Likewise his recent duet CD with MIke Marshall, though it contains some ostensibly "celtic" pieces.

Shame on us all for not mentioning Andy Irvine and Planxty. I recently watched a cut of the Planxty 2004 reunion DVD from http://www.liveireland.com/. He was playing mando on one tune and zouk on the other. Literally brought tears to my eyes.

I've been playing Irish music for about 2 years. I find that it just isn't in the "standard set" of Irish music instruments. I think that's because it just ain't all that easy to play a reel up to speed on a mando (you hit some physics issues pretty quickly), not to mention the general volume issue.

If you find others, please send them to me. I'm always looking, though I keep thinking I will move to an easier instrument for Irish music...

Best,
Keyton

I started a new search and came up with this old post to this discussion group. Lots of nuggets worth investigation here:

Re: Mandolin Albums

kEYTON,

I just read that you got the wrong CD.
I imagine that the mix-up happened in the shop, as I supply unopened CDs to my distributor, who would have then supplied the shop.
Nonetheless, if you e-mail me privately I will try to sort you out.
I am sorry that happened. and am glad that I happened to spot this thread.

Dagger Gordon.

Re: Mandolin Albums

Have to agree with Dceol about Nuada being a great new group as I watched them on Comhaltaslive last week and I hope that the programme will feature more of their stuff in the weeks ahead.

Re: Mandolin Albums

Bannerman/Dceol,

I looked for the Nuada CD you guys suggested (always looking for more Irish mando music). Looks like their site (http://www.nuadamusic.com) has been "suspended."

Any ideas where to find these folks' music for sale?

EVERYONE,

Note that there are at least two other groups called Nuada aside from this Irtrad group from Munster. One is fantasy/sci-fi electronica. The other is a ren-fest like group including Hurdy Gurdy as one of the main instruments.

Re: Mandolin Albums

Besides Dervish, does anyone know of recordings of people doing two or more two strings per course instruments together. ;-)

Re: Mandolin Albums

Hi CC,
Firstly that post doesn't really make much sense!!

I think I know what you mean though....
hmm i might bug a few people writing this, but IMHO I think Planxty are the forefathers of this sound. They developed the string sound (mandolin mandola bouzouki) in Iirsh music.

Dervish' rythm section sound has developed into a stunning sound of their own, but in the first albums, you can hear big similarities with the Planxty music.

Good albums for strings are the first 4 Planxty albums,
Andy Irvine & Paul Brady for lovey mandolin and guitar combo's with the robust lunny lending his solid support.

Don't DanĂș have a guitarist and a bouzouki player???any way I don't think these guys are rythmically as strong as Planxty or Dervish.

Stefanpaz: yes, a bit sloppy on the question. Still morning here in this time zone and still waking up. But you got it right. Thanks for the information.

Don't Altan have a guitarist and a bouzouki player???

Re: Mandolin Albums

Laughtonb: Diatha Sproule and Ciaran Curran are an awesome team for Altan. The new Local Ground album is wonderful.

Re: Mandolin Albums

There are two great recordings where terrific mandolin music can be heard. It is from a group called "Waxie's Dargle" - a British-based band, I think. The two albums are "World Tour of Ireland" and "Paddy Ryan's Dream". They have a lot of driving instrumentals lead out by the mandolin of all things. The rest of the cuts are very good and lively barroom songs.

Amazon has them priced as an import for $2,571.08 each. Now ... they are good, trust me, but they are not THAT good.

You might just find these on the shelves in Ireland or the UK. Americans and others can check their mail order sources. I think I paid a buck three-eighty in some reduced price bin somewhere in a store in New York City.

Happy hunting!
