I'm looking into electric mandolins and would really appreciate any info / opinions on the subject. I'm after a solid-bodied electric and am open as regards price etc. so any ideas?
Cheers.
A friend whom I haven't seen in a while has one that looks like a baby Stratocaster, sort of. I don't remember the brand, but he loves it. If I connect with him reasonably soon, I'll ask about it. I've seen him do a few gigs with it and it sounded pretty cool and looked like so much fun that I started drooling.
If you have an interest in mandolins should visit The Acoustic Music Company in Brighton - mandolin heaven!
The website address is www.theacousticmusicco.co.uk and they have quite a few electric mandolins in stock now.
They have an amazing stock - far wider than anything even in the better known shops in the USA.
Solid body mandolins with eight strings and magnetic style pickups can sound terrible, this is why many of the solid bodies are five string. With piezo style pickups I find that bridge mounted ones ( such as the ovation{I've got one worse luck} and the crafter) suffer from excessive pick noise, although the tones available are good. I much prefer the sound of internally mounted piezo.
I understand that some Rigel mandolin models come with internal piezo. And they look like little Stratocasters too. Maybe that's what you heard that night. Anyway, their website is: http://www.rigelmandolins.com. Good luck!
I've been thinking about designing a solid curly maple, through-the-body-neck style electric mandolin for about three months now. I am a luthier located in Minneapolis.
Send me an email with your contact information. I can be reached at: baz@mm.com

Re: Electric Mandolin
I saw Solas recently, and Seamus Egan played what appeared to be a Gibson electric mandolin. It sounded excellent.

Re: Electric Mandolin
I had a 5 string solid one made for me by Flatbush mandolins in Denmark, they did a great job.
