I took my way back home with 15 minutes of the match left and when I got home ... a draw !

Re: World cup

Kameroon just won Saudi Arabia. Not the best result for us. If we beat SA and KRN & Germany draw , The three teams will have 5 points. But, as long as Kameroon just won 1-0, a two goals victory against SA would qualify us.

If either GRM or KMR win and we win (no matter the score), we'll be qualified as well.

Eireann go bre

Re: World cup

I heard that if we beat saudi by two goals or more we will go through - is that true?

# Posted on June 6th 2002 by bb

Re: World cup

heh, enough of all this! scotland will win the cup hands down;)............by not even being in it. arn't we amazing

# Posted on June 6th 2002 by laura nesbit

Re: World cup

In reply to bb's question the answer is yes - two clear goals and ireland is through!! wohoo. And thats only if the Germany v Cameroon game is a draw, if either team wins then Ireland only need a draw to go through!

(not like the french..... hee hee! Go Senegal!)

Re: World cup

We were watching the Ireland/Germany match in the Dogs Bollix in Auckland, NZ at midnight. The equaliser was around 1am and the crowd still had the energy to go wild. We'll be watching on Tuesday night - same time to make sure Ireland produce the goods.

Re: World cup

Gongrats. I am glad for the Irish, of course. But I must say I was even happier that Germany beat Carmeroon 2:0. What a rough match, though: tons of yellow cards, and two players explulsed...

BTW, it was nice to see the Irish actually score more than one goal for a change and to win a game. It is truely amazing how far you can go on draws... =)

Re: World cup

Brazil has already moved to the next phase, no matter what happens tomorrow morning, so i'm not expecting a very interesting game tomorrow; good thing, since i'll be sleeping anyway.

I have no idea how the next phase is going to shape out (partly because being outside the civilized world now, i don't even have a score sheet -- that's when you see how important the Internet is). I though all the strong teams were going to move on automatically, since each group pretty much had 1 strong and 3 weak teams, but there were a lot of surprises (good ones!).

# Posted on June 11th 2002 by glauber

Re: World cup

Glauber, I just hope there is no one from France here to hear you talk about "good" surprises. Let's see how Argentina will do tomorrow...

# Posted on June 11th 2002 by Bloomfield

Re: World cup

No offence lads but I was going for Carmeroon !! They are a nice team & they play nice football (sorry to any german supporters;) its a pity they didnt get through. But it truly was a shock that Ireland scored more than one goal....woohoo

# Posted on June 12th 2002 by bb

Re: World cup

We do take offence, bb, of course. =)

Can you guys believe the Mexico - Italy match? I would not have wanted to be in Trappatoni's shoes if the Azzurri had not made the next round. Mamma mia.

# Posted on June 13th 2002 by Bloomfield

Re: World cup

Darn... i was hoping for another good surprise! :-)

# Posted on June 13th 2002 by glauber

Re: World cup

A good surprise, Glauber? Like Brazil being knocked out before the quarter-finals? Heeheehee. ;-)

# Posted on June 13th 2002 by Bloomfield

This could still happen. The thing you have to keep in mind is that, for most of the people in Brazil, a silver medal is just a slightly better result than being knocked off in the first round. Even worse, everybody thinks they could be doing a better job than the coaches.

# Posted on June 13th 2002 by glauber

Brasil

Also, many people dislike the current teams (past 12 years or so). They dislike the fact that these guys go play in Europe, Saudi Arabia or Japan for a lot of money, than come back just for the World Cup. Then, of course you have a team that's made up of great players who have no experience working together. But that's what happens when you're not one of the richer countries, it's just life. If they win, people forgive them a little.

So far they're doing better than expected, but the easy part is over and they better fix their defense strategy soon, or it will get ugly quick.

Re: World cup

Right. Spain's next.

I'm living dangerously in enemy's ground. Last night I saw an ad of Sunday's match on Spanish TV. They showed the irish players as they are standing in the previuous moments of the match, listening to the national anthem.

Then a voice says: "Look at these men very carefully. You won't see them again. Sunday the 16th Spain vs Ireland". Outrageous !!

I decided to put on my Irish rugby shirt (sorry, I don't have the football one) and walk the streets of Barcelona to show my irishness and my not-spanishness.

Up Ireland !!!

# Posted on June 14th 2002 by bb

Re: World cup

Yes, America is being represented by Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay and USA.

# Posted on June 14th 2002 by glauber

Re: World cup

Good one, glauber. Brazil & Mexico: real underdogs, there. BTW, about the best players playing abroad. That's not just a South American phenomenon. I remember not to long ago, when half the German national team were playing for Italian clubs: Voeller, Klinsman, Bierhoff etc etc. Then everybody went to England for a while. Now it seems a bit more balanced again. But Miro Klose, who has the most goals in the tournament so far supposedly just received to multi-million offers from Italian clubs...

There is a number of really interesting matches coming up: Korea-Italy, Spain-Ireland, Brazil-Belgium...

# Posted on June 14th 2002 by Bloomfield

Re: World cup

Mexico and USA should be a real good game. Spain/Ireland too. I was hoping for a BrazilxPortugal match, but now it won't happen.

I found a good game schedule, BTW. It's in Portuguese :-), but most of the country names should be recognizable.
http://makeashorterlink.com/?S3AC24F01

I'm part German too. I remember the last time Germany took the Cup, that i was supposed to play a prelude in church, and of course i had to play Deutschland Ubber Alles. It irritated a lot of people, but they had to concede that they do have that melody in the Presbyterian hymnal. :-)

Re: World cup

Went home for the match against Spain this weekend - what a pity we didn't win as we were by far the better team for most of the game. Well, even in defeat the crowd at the bar managed to have a party. There was even time for a few tunes on the box!
I suppose I'll have to support Spain now, as you want to be able to say "We were put out by the eventual winners of the tournament". Otherwise I'm with Jamie - Come On Senegal!!

# Posted on June 16th 2002 by Conán McDonnell

Re: World cup

If I hadn't had enough with that miserable defeat. I have to read on today spanish newspapers how the brave Spanish team, full of heroes, passed through against all odds ... the Irish and the referee. For God Sake!

As a result of the match, the Spanish team is now widely considered (at least in Spain) a serious candidate to be the final winner.

Anyway, I'll try to skip all this rubbish about the 'toreros' (bullfighters). As a first step I'll have a couple of pints tonight in our weekly seis

Re: World cup

Well as long as it isn't England I'll be happy. Imagine 1966 all over again! They never shut up about it. I for one couldn't put up with another 34 years of that jingoistic cr*p.
Um, rant over! ;

# Posted on June 17th 2002 by Conán McDonnell

Re: World cup

Its true - If the english win we'll never hear the end of it - but I'd prefer they win than spain - I really never hated a team as much as I hate spain right now! Although saying that - I watched BBC 1 yesterday for the match & you wouldve thought that england were playing - it was clear they all went for Ireland and kept going on about how they deserved it more than spain and how dissapointing it was & how Ireland were brilliant etc - it was quite lovely actually ;-)) Dont worry lads - there is always next time.....Conan when are ye going to come to galway for a few tunes with micheal Darby?

# Posted on June 17th 2002 by bb

Re: World cup

Hey, if you want to root for a team that will leave worried, expecting the worst and hoping for the best until the last minute of the game until you're a nervous wreck, you could root for the next team that will play against England, this thursday. :-)

Anybody out there in the still sleeping US .....

(we here in Germany have already reached Office times on a brilliant sunny Friday morning and Brazil:England finished their first half 1:1 while Germany slowly gets into some world cup fever and most people hope they have the opportunity to the the coming soon match USA:Germany)

Re: World cup

Yesyesyes. I *was* us against them. So glad Germany won.

Sorry, USA. Good showing, though. I had to go this Italian barbershop to watch the game, but there were several of us in the second half. The US played really well and there were a few very ticklish moments.

OK, here are my bets for the rest of the tournament:

S. Korea - Spain 2:0
Turkey - Senegal 2:1

Brazil - Turkey 4:2
Germany - S. Korea 3:0 ;-)

Germany beats Brazil 3:2 in the finals.

Can you imagine what 2006 will be like if Germany wins this year? Hehehe...

Bloomfield, with a little sideview at the ongoing thread "think before you post" I must tell you that I have chosen my stake quite reasonable (a set of fine fiddle strings is not too far away from the main topic of this site and community, I think)

... well, the US boys played really great (congratulations!!! / I think next time they even show playing Luftwaffe in perfection) and the Deutsche FussballBund-team won more or less by chance. So I don
