Willy Clancy

Willy Clancy

hi,
I wonder if there's anybody who has been in the Willy Clancy workshops. I have attended only one workshop, the one organised by the Galway School of Trad Music on August and it was good. A friend asked me about the Willy Clancy one and I didn't know what to say. I'm going back to Galway in 3 weeks, if it is good I might go too.

Re: Willy Clancy

Do you mean the Willie Clancy Summer School in Milltown Malbay, Co. Clare?

I've been to it three years running. The teaching there takes the form of graded classes (beginners, intermediate, advanced) rather than workshops. For most instruments, ther are no absolute beginners classes. The quality of the teaching obviously depends on whose class you happen to get placed in, but speaking from my own experience, the whistle classes were well worth going to. Even if you do not attend classes, it is worth going to Milltown for 'Willie Week' for the sessions and recitals, and just to witness the sheer quantity of music going on there.

Incidentally, what is/are your instrument(s)?

As I remember it, there are classes for fiddle, flute, whistle, pipes, concertina and various kinds of set dancing (about which I am shamefully ignorant). There are also a few non-instrument based workshops.

Re: Willy Clancy

I have been to flute classes at the Willie Clancy week several times, and always found them very useful. However,it has to be said that although the tutors are all great traditional players, it is not always the case that they are great teachers!
I particularly enjoyed meeting other players of a similar ability, and found swapping tips and tunes with them to be as useful as the "formal" classes. It's also a great way to meet new friends with the same interest (obsession ?).
A tape -recorder/mini-disc recorder is essential.
Only problem gets to be at the end of the week when the combination of lack of sleep/excess of Guinness can make it a real chore getting along to the classes which start at 10am - this seems to apply to the tutors as well!
I'd recommend it and I'll be there again - there has been a previous discussion on this, look it up. Maybe our paths will cross. Good Luck!

Re: Willy Clancy

Hey if any of you make it to Milltown, be sure to look me up as I'll be staying at the Baita Bosco youth hostel (Spanish Point) along with a crowd from Belfast. We hire the place out every year for the thirty or so kids and usually at least one class is held there. Last year it was the button box class so we had Joe Burke around a few times.
By the way, I would thoroughly recommend the set dance classes as I went to the beginners class for a few years. It's the best way to sweat off a hangover bar none.

Regards,

Conan

Re: Willy Clancy

well, you convinced me.I don't know if I'll be able to find a place to stay for the week, so I might not make it for the classes, but I'll definately go, at least for the craic and play some tunes with friends.

Re: Willy Clancy

It is a good laugh - but I would say - if you are keen for serious tunes then dont get your hopes up! Though I know that jo marsh and Carole leader are going down - there are alway some great players around - you just have to find out where exactly they are!

Re: Willy Clancy

hey, I'm mike, i know i've missed the month of this discussion slightly but when i went to the willy clancy week there were some top players about! The workshops were fairly good. It's worth it more for the sessions. If you are starved for sessions like me, it's well worth your money to stay!
