This web site keeps me company while I practice. My CD player, tune database, and tune lists are all right here. I take a breather and check to see what you guys are on about. Sometimes I learn something, sometimes I can share something I know, and a lot of time I'm just goofing around -- but it's company. To answer your question though -- I play more than post.
I only post cause I work on the internet - Im in front of a screen all day designing websites for bed and breakfasts, and christian family centres....rivetting
I think about music in general & Irish music all the time! - so why not talk about it while I'm at work?
Playing- even though i get drawn on to here looking for a tune, and then end up reading/posting in the discussions, although sometimes i got to think a bit more before posting than playing!
Depends - posting right now, but often it's playing.
If I had a choice in the matter it would be playing, of course. My wee boy and my girl are both in bed as I write, and typing is a helluva lot quieter than practicing. Occasionally during the day I can catch up between experiments, so I post then too.
I see in my member history that I'm closing in on 5,000 comments. Yikes! But that's spread over 3 years. And I'm a fast typist, so even my longer posts usually take only 5 minutes or so to bang in. Averaged out with the frequent one-liner comments, and even including the tunes I've posted, and I've spent maybe 300 hours here. All while ostensibly working (which requires me to be on the computer anyway). In the same three years I've played at least 1,500 hours (an average of around 10 hours a week), likely much more. So it's no contest.
Also, when we get to talking about tunes or technique, I'm often playing as I post.
If this thread was meant in any way as a poke at people who spend their time here, I'd say it's a shallow poke at best. This site isn't what I do *in place of* playing--it's what I do when I'm all played out from a long session, and what inspires me, even when I'm stuck at work, to play later. I'm guessing this is true for many of the contributors here.
I spend very little time posting. I peruse the list of most recently submitted discussions, and if a topic piques my interest, I will read it. If I find the thread REALLY fascinating and relevant, only then I will comment.
So what if it is a poke?
It doesn't worry me.
If you can't have the opportunity to play you may as well "talk a good job", rather than not talking about it at all...cos then it might go off the agenda.
Not currently having internet access in the flat this is not something I do "*In place of* playing" to quote Will. It is rather something I do *in place of* work!!!
To answer the original question I play far more than post - particularly lately when I have been quite quiet on the board. As I finish my job today I expect this balance to shift even more to the playing.
I should have added that I'm doing other things while I'm online too. However, Jack more or less summed it up in the following post. I'm also checking out new tunes in various data bases(here and elsewhere), looking for recordings, info, buying CDs, listening to music and the radio, and all sorts. So, my posting time is only a small part. I'm also practising/playing even when I'm online, eg trying out tunes before I save or print them, using slow down software to help me with more difficult stuff.
Also, I'm retired now and still don't have enough time in the day to do all I want. Amusing myself with the computer is only part of it all.
It'd be great if we all had webcams and vidphone links so we could all play on our instruments (fnarr fnarr) and on our computers and ultimately with each other with no more physical boundaries!!!!!!!! The supreme audio/video experience.
Whaddya all think?????????
Although I think in David a's case that might not be appropriate. How're ya doin by the way??? Not too snowed in I hope. Looks like fun on the cathedral too. Probably see you all at DonalDonfest in October. Take care M + C.
ps. I am joking about cybersessions. Could you imagine?????
I dunno Alistair but I'm sure some bright spark would come up with a plug-in device.(ouch!!)
What worries me is being able to find the bar and buying rounds. It just wouldn't be natural!
ps. David is a luvly chap incidentally and a maker of fine fiddles too.
And if you're really hooked to the net and not playing tunes then try out these two links for a bit of harmless fun poking G. Bush type stuff. He really is stupid.....
Maybe all the people who claim to prefer playing to posting could stop adding to this post and record a tune for Jim Dorans’ Mighty Craic site http://worldfiddlemusic.co.uk/mightycraiconline
That would be fun.

For me, it's definitely playing. Even although it might not always seem that way!

Re: Playing or Posting... Which Gets More Time?
If I were home and able to play, I wouldn't be staring at a computer. This is my mental health break. (this and the local thrift store) :D
Thumb through the new tunes, see who's on about what, learn something. Back to work with something to think about other than ...just work.

Playing, there's no doubt about it. Takes me too long to type stuff.
I just like a good tune or ten!

Playing or Working? -- more like. Of the time I have the opportunity to either play or post, 100% is spent playing.
