Best Tunes for Beginning Fiddle

Best Tunes for Beginning Fiddle

I'm trying to compile a list of the top twenty or so best tunes for beginning fiddle. I'm looking for tunes that are either in DM or modal and don't have a lot of string crossings.

Any contibutions or ideas?

Re: Best Tunes for Beginning Fiddle

at least after five tunes well learned the beginner needs some other stuff than dm modal without string crossings... there should be a nice balance of some foundation and some reaching for the sun.

Um, how beginning? Like, "Dawning of the Day" beginning? Or reels and jigs?

Some of my current favs to teach:

Reel of Rio (reel, of course)
Liz Kelly's (slide)
Barney Brallighan's (slip jig)
Trip to Athlone (jig)

How about Rolling In The Ryegrass? Played "straight" it's pretty simple. A stripped down two-part Mountain Road is a lot of fun as well

Re: Best Tunes for Beginning Fiddle

Rakes of Mallow is always a good starter.
A few others are:
Dorset's
Top of Cork Road
Off She Goes
John Stenson's
I think most of these are on this groups tune list.
