fiddle teachers in london?

Hey there:

Been checking out a few local sessions, and am thinking to myself that I could really use a weekly or bi-weekly lesson or two. So, does anyone know of any decent fiddle teachers in London? I'm sure there have got to be a few out there. ;-) My favorite fiddler at one of the sessions I attend (Mark Conyard) doesn't give lessons, unfortunately. Any ideas?

Re: fiddle teachers in london?

Get in touch with Brendan Mulkere. He does classes in Hammersmith I believe. He IS the maestro.

Many of today's generation of very good London Irish players have been tutored by Brenadan. These include Mick Conneely, Mick Mulvey, Kane O'Rourke and Brian Kelly, among many others.

Another London fiddle teacher is Pete Cooper who gives classes and private lessons. http://www.petecooper.com/workshops.htm

Between them Brendan & Pete must have taught half of London's fiddle players

Karen Ryan of the "London Lasses" is good too. She does private from home and intermediate-advanced workshops out fo the London Irish Centre in Camden. She started the "Return to Camdentown" festival. london.lasses@virgin.net I've got her direct e-mail around here somewhere if that doesn't work.

I've actually been to all three at one time or another. I was thinking that Pete Cooper was doing more world music lately. His Wednesdays night were WELL attended.

Brendan Mulkere is steeped in the tradition. I love his fiddle playing. HIs slow airs are incredilble. His group lessons tend to be a very session like. I don't think he does private lessons.

Karen is fantastic too. She spends her time between being a professional musician and teacher. She is deeply inlolved with spreading the gospel of ITM.

I really don't think you could go wrong with any of the three, but my leanings would be towards Brenden and Karen though not by much.

Re: fiddle teachers in london?

I second the Karen Ryan recommendation, she's a lovely fiddle player, very patient and a very nice person too.

I would third the Karen Ryan recommendation. If you e-mail me privately I can give you her contact details.

Re: fiddle teachers in london?

I think that it depends on what you want from lessons. Pete's Wednesday nights have encouraged me to play in sessions in a way that one to one tution could not. In fact his summer course is entitled "Great Traditional Session Tunes". (His website (above) has a description and the dates in the workshop section.)
