Heya, didnt know youd joined the session, i cant help you with the jigs yet but thought id say hi cos nobody replied to u yet. I expect u can guess who i am from my name
Seamhanac tube station - sounds like a cult 70s slasher horror film to me! I,m pretty sure its actually in Gm.I think Paddy Fahey`s is also Gm?
I hope I,m wrong as that would leave only two jigs in d minor - in the world, surely not!
Well, it's not that easy to say what key/mode a tune is in because "your" setting may be different than "mine." As I know it, Walls of Liscarroll is D mixolydian (the F's are sharped), and the Paddy Fahy's from Martin Hayes' Lonesome Touch (|DGA ~B3|cBc d2|) is actually in G dorian.
My own little jig, The Freudian Slip Jig (it's in the tune archives), basically works out in D minor, though some might say it's in A phrygian, and the third part is basically F major.
At sesssion I've been to, I Buried My Wife and Danced on Her Grave is most commonly played in D mixolydian, not with flatted Bs and natural Fs.
Not that any of this helps find a true trad D minor jig, except by process of elimination
Your setting must be different than mine Will, I've never heard the Walls of Liscarroll played with any F's in it - the only time I've seen it with F's was in O'Neill's but I've never heard anyone play it that way. Most people would say that jig is D Dorian, which is the next best thing to D minor.
Interesting. There are plenty of reels, at least in Ddorian if not true Dminor - but jigs seem to be thin on the ground. I've heard The Castle Jig (normally in Aminor) transposed into Dminor. There are also a number of jigs which are hexatonic - i.e. they lack the 3rd degree of the scale - and could be interpreted as either Dorian or Mixolydian. One that springs to mind is The Yellow Wattle.
The only jig I can think of which is actually in Dminor is one called The Sailor's Wife, which, I think, is of Scots origin.
Well, my version of Liscarroll is somewhat different from the O'Neill's setting, too, and I learned it from a fiddler who learned it in sessions in West Clare. Which makes my point, I guess, that it's not easy to say that a given tune is played in a given key or mode. It depends on what notes the player chooses to put in or leave out, and then what chords an accompanist (if there is one) might add, or even more to the point, what overall sound might be perceived by a listener.
So Anna's original query is a difficult one to respond to in ITM, and perhaps not simply because she asked for D minor jigs.
Will I'd like to hear your setting, it sounds interesting. I already feel like it lends itself to not quite major thirds. ya know that "Clare blue-note" that sits somewhere between F & F#.
Yeah, when we play Walls of L here, it seems each players finds his/her own interpretation of just where those F's are supposed to fall. I keep leaning toward the natural end, while a more scottish player amongst us slants toward the sharp.
I'll post it in the comments to the tune here as soon as I have a few minutes....
im nearly sure that seanamhac tube station is in Bminor or at least it was the last time i checked! ill say just this: Dminor is a bitch to accompany on guitar. Seriously.
Personally, D minor (Dorian, Aeolian, etc.) is one of my favorite keys to accompany on guitar, especially using drop D tuning. Lots of voicings up the neck using open strings.
