Water front Busking

Water front Busking

Im 16 years old and this summer im looking into Busking by the waterfront , with my friend who playes the fiddle. (I play the flute) does anyone have any suggestions of some tunes that people hear and think 'Nova Scotia' , that are fairly easy to remeber, and that sound fairly well with both the fiddle and the flute? If any of you know of any duet peices or 2 songs that mingle well that would be great (jigs, reels. hornpipes and airs) Also for all you Busker Vetrens do you have any tips or hints for us?
Any help no matter how small would help a lot!!
ex. how to stand/ sit to achive max amount of playing time without falling apart.
We both really appreciat any and all help! thank you soo much!

Re: Water front Busking

You probably won't find any physical books, but you'll find more than you could possibly read on the internet. I'd start here:
http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/index.html
and bounce around from there. The abc community is alive and well, and the free software out there is excellent.

Re: Water front Busking

Play what you most enjoy playing together. That way you'll play your best. Then you'll get more positive feedback from the public and you'll play even better as a result. The money takes care of itself - or doesn't, as the case may be. That's my approach, anyway. Some people have their 'tricks of the trade' for holding people's attention, but if you are playing as a group, the interaction between you should be captivating enough. Whatever you do, just make sure you're having fun.

If you run short of tunes, try a juggling act with old chainsaws or tomahawks.

Re: Water front Busking

the best way to learn abc (after you read the tutorials) is by writing down tunes you know or just looking at sheet music, abc'ing it, and converting it to sheet music again. whether or not its right, the sheet music will show.

"Whatever you do, just make sure you're having fun."

Well, as it happens, this is one of the tricks of the trade.

Re: Water front Busking

I learnt "Mouth of the Tobique" off a fiddler in O'Carroll's in Halifax and will forever associate that tune with the Halifax waterfront, even though it's not strictly Nova Scotian.

"Barratt's Privateers" seems to be obligatory in that context too, though I'm sure locals will be well sick of it.

"I'm a broke-down man on a Halifax pier ...."
