Hi ye all. When I hear this term I always have a laugh to myself and imagine me bursting into tears at the end of The Killarney Boys of Pleasure,or shouting out "That's so true!!" halfway through a set.So, are there many of you empathic types out there are do you have as much trouble holding back as I do?
I still persevere with picking, just for myself, and do enjoy it.I learnt the fiddle at school and didn't have the patience for the cat strangling, have tried to go back to it now and again but the whistle seems to be "calling me" more than the other-I do agree with that sentiment in a recent thread about some instruments being suited to an individual more than others.
Also,as discussed often here,as a humble guitar player you can only benefit from learning the melodies of the tunes ,IMO.
Someone was discussing the "soul" of the music recently -Johnny Doherty-'nuff said I reckon.
I've been know to shed a tear or two, here and there. Yes.
As for the music, I flat pick tunes a bit for my own enjoyment, and as part of my standard guitar warmup routine, but when the serious ITM starts I'm a senstive enough backer that I'm silent.
The guitar stays in the case and it's whistle and fiddle time, although some suggest that I've switched from being sensitive to abusive when that happens.
I do have trouble to hold back sometimes, especially after two pints or so, where my sensitivity goes down the drain. Thankfully our fiddle player is of 'assertive' type, ie. she starts calling me foul words every time I get a bit too fast or loud, thus keeping me in right tempo and dynamics. She is invaluable.
Im fairly sensitive meself.group hugs and all that..
However my guitar's a fairly obnoxious beast prone to running away with things & cramming every chord it knows into one tune etc.
I keep trying to infuse it with some of my laid-back new age man minimalist persona but it's not having any...
I think it really depends...
In some sessions, if there is no backer and maybe only a couple of instruments - ill go for the counter melody, and chordal shapes - but if there is another mandola, or guitar, ill go for the droney chords mixed with fills.....i suppose Id think of one.
so i guess i like playing both ways!
Sometimes nice quiet and subtle and some times hellferleather!
- It also depends on who Im playing with, where they are from and what instrument they play!
I try to be. I keep a steady beat, keyed in on the playing of person who called the set. I try to mix up the chords I use in accompaniment to keep it less boring. And I am working on different strumming patterns, also to keep it interesting, but bottom line, I keep the beat steady. Last night, it was just me and three fiddlers, and a couple of times I just had to stop and listen--not every moment of perfect beauty needs to be accompanied by a guitarist!

i hope some players sense this in me and that would be fairly fufilling as i know i can be
unfortunetly, after a few pints, i may be (or probabily am) a bit more insensitive than i may like to be and (depending on the players) i probabily slip into a rockier ''safe'' style of backing _ sometimes this occurs anyway out of boredom . . .
i find it hard to remain strict when i naturally invest so much on the basic feel of a tune and don't know which way the backing is working until the split second it's played out
sensitively or not, right or wrong, black or white, i care not . . .
Are you a sensitive backer?

I'm more of a semi-sensitive hacker.

Re: Are you a sensitive backer?
I was going to recommend flute over fiddle therapy for guitar bunging up but that would just be crass.Keep jogging.

Re: Are you a sensitive backer?
As a fiddler, I make our guitarist cry more often than not. And she's not really the empathic type.

Re: Are you a sensitive backer?
Yes! But don't get the chance - sometimes only melody player here.
Have been known to say ''Please dear horsie, win for me!'' Does that count as sensitive backing?

Re: Are you a sensitive backer?
As a goatskin jockey, I'm probably oversensitive and frequently burst into sobs when the s.o.b.s. tell me they'll lend me their penknives.

Re: Are you a sensitive backer?
A sensitive backer? Sure! I get really sensitive when someone tells me to shut the f*** up in the middle of my bodhran solo!
