Wedding Tunes

Can anyone suggest some good wedding songs, specifically slow airs? I'm playing fiddle for my brother's wedding in a couple of months and am looking for some nice slow tunes. He told me just nothing that will make people want to get up and dance. Suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!\
-Ally

Re: Wedding Tunes

Some that might work well are "If Ever You Were Mine" and "Give Me Your Hand".

Re: Wedding Tunes

You could always put an Irish twist on Pacabel's Canon... only kidding....as I dodge the swinging of fists from the peanut gallery.

Re: Wedding Tunes

Give Me Your Hand, maybe Amanda's Waltz? How about St. Kilda's Wedding, for marching out the door? and wha's wrong wid dancing? Last October, we were asked to play a Johnny Cash tune and although a stretch, it worked just fine. Who'd a thunk?

Re: Wedding Tunes

I once played Planxty Irwin for a wedding march. Worked pretty well.

Re: Wedding Tunes

I got lucky doing a JC Tunefinder search on the surname of the groom - McCleod. I found a lovely Scottish tune called McCleod's March. Worked really well for the bride arriving.
Kings of Laois is another lovely March played slowly for the entrance.
Good luck.

Re: Wedding Tunes

Everyone seems to like Inisheer at weddings.
Easter Snow also a good one for the waiting times.

Re: Wedding Tunes

Mike Schulze, the Irish version of Pachelbel's Canon actually exists. http://thesession.org/tunes/display.php/487 ;-)

Re: Wedding Tunes

Unfortunately, some well meaning person will probably want to compose a tune for Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles. :-(

*Please don't*

Re: Wedding Tunes

Zina, thanks for the links :-)

I actually heard Pacabel's (irishized) done live at a folk festival in St. Catharines by a Canadian Band named Siobhan. They did a really great job of it and I always wondered what became of them, they put on a really great show.

Re: Wedding Tunes

heeeeeeey Pachelbel's Canon is awesome!!!!!!!! I think it'd be great to do an arrangement with pipes, fiddle, mandolin, etc!!

Actually, I turned the reel into a slow hornpipe and I kind of did my own version of Canon...

...

Hark! Do you hear that? That's Pachelbel turning over in his grave =P

Cheers,
Armand

Re: Wedding Tunes

The Wedding March from Charlie Lennons Island wedding is a beautiful peice of music. If you play it slowly its really nice. Listen to the whole recording because there are some fabulous pieces of music on it.

Banter - its for everyone!

Re: Wedding Tunes

The "Loan us some blow man" aka Lonesome boatman. Only kidding, although I have played it at funerals.

"My Lagan Love" "An Gaoth Aneas" any thing will do, and although it may be considered "bad form" by some, the punters at the wedding would just love, absolutely adore, cry their eyes out, for "that" tune from "TITANIC".
Somebody had to say it.

Re: Wedding Tunes

Slightly off topic to wedding tunes, but Pachabel's Frolicks is a fav in the step dancing CD collection. I bought a cd off antoniopacelli.com with this and had to learn it straight away.

The Breton Wedding March.

Re: Wedding Tunes

I found that the "Titanic" theme doesn't go down too well at weddings (pardon the pun). Even though it was in huge demand for a time, once the tune is divested of the orchestra and Celine Dion, there is very little left! Very simple tune after all.

Re: Wedding Tunes

"That's Pachelbel turning over in his grave =P"

About a week ago I was working out some vocal harmonies for a friends "alternative" song.

Something about it struck me as familiar, but it took me while to put my finger on it. . . then it hit me.

I was singing the bass line to Pachelbel's Canon. The song is Pachelbel all "Radioheaded" up. I don't think my friend even realizes that.

Re: Wedding Tunes

Yes, well. Did you know that you can easily fit the old Burger King theme song ("hold the pickles, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us, all we ask is that you let us do it your way...") in the Canon? It's a terrible thing to realize because, after that, you'll never be able to hear the thing without at least mentally (even if while swearing you're not going to sing it) singing the jingle...

No, I didn't.

You did this to me on purpose, didn't you? :)

Re: Wedding Tunes

We played Pachabel's Frolics just last Tuesday at the session. A bit spirited for a wedding--better for the reception after.

Re: Wedding Tunes

You could play it for the recessional, right enough, though. That's traditionally very upbeat sort of music there.

Re: Wedding Tunes

We did the Skye Boat Song as a processional recently at a wedding, and then were watching an old episode of "Sex and the City," and realized that the air had been used when the character Charlotte married her Scottish beau, so we weren't as original as we thought. In the show, the attendants marched up to Skye Boat Song, and the bride to Scotland the Brave, which is kind of a bellicose song, and not a good choice, I thought. But then again, while the air to Skye Boat Song is pretty, its words are pretty grim themselves.

Re: Wedding Tunes

'If I Get a Boanie Lass' and 'Da Bride's Welcome Hame'
Appropriately titled, if nothing else!
