getting the most from a workshop

getting the most from a workshop

Tonight I am taking a 3-hour fiddle workshop with Martin Hayes. Can anyone tell me what to expect? Any advice on how to really benefit from this great opportunity?

Re: getting the most from a workshop

Ive been in a couple of workshops with Martin - he is a very good teacher, he will tell it like it is. If you have a problem with tuning - he'll tell you - not in a mean way or anything. I actually found his comments very helpful - it gave me direction and I knew specifically what I had to work on etc. I would say, tape the whole thing - including the talking, questions, comments etc you'll get so much more out of it if you can go back and listen to it over again & dont be afraid to ask questions. Well now I've finished rambling maybe someone who has some 'good' ideas will say something:-)

Re: getting the most from a workshop

Wow, lucky you, Lynn. Workshops are always somewhat problematic, I know many of the players don't really consider it teaching; Kevin Burke says he just throws out a bunch of information and lets people pick and choose what they want to get out of the experience, for instance.

The following bits are things I've learned from organizing music workshops: If the group is small and you're all at roughly the same level, ask lots and lots of questions. If you're all at different levels, then it's up to Martin to figure out what he wants to give you -- if the information is at a different level from you, try to remember that you can often pick up things from the player even if s/he's talking about things over or under your head that still apply to your own level of playing.

I've never taken a lesson from Martin Hayes, but everyone that I know who has has said that he's a really good teacher. Have fun, and tell us how it went!

Thanks, bb and Zina! I'm a bit intimidated about the whole thing..... We'll see how it goes!

Re: getting the most from a workshop

Great oportunity to learn, Lynn,

If you prepare a piece of paper with lots of questions on it, then you will get the
most out of it. Maybe you can even let Martin read it at the beginning, he can get an
idea of what he can teach you - if he wants. If you are prepared, then it can only help
you.

Other than that, leave it to your teacher, and go with the flow.

Re: getting the most from a workshop

It was fantastic! He gave us so much more than just a new tune (Mulqueen's -great tune). He spoke about musicianship tone and how to reveal the melody and to feel free to convey the feeling of the tune no matter what our ability level. I have been on Cloud 9 since. And the guitarists tell me that Dennis Cahill was inspiring as well. I am so glad I went.

Almost in tears hearing about it. That is just so wonderful - so glad it was so much more than expected and so great. Amazingly, I think I've had a go at Mulqueen's myself but never had anyone to play it with.
All the best up there on cloud 9.
Cheers

Re: getting the most from a workshop

Great, Lynn! So tell us -- what did YOU get out of it? Do you feel your ability to reveal the melody and feeling of a tune has improved? Or your general musicianship? Are you finding that it impacts how you practice? Give, give, give! :)

I'm glad to hear that Dennis Cahill seems to be holding up well. I can only wish him the best.

Jill

Jill, now you have someone to play it with! Load down from http://www.zinalee.com/sounds/mulqueens.mp3. That's Jessica Ziegler of Chicago, and Matt and Shannon Heaton of Boston -- the set is:

Charlie Harris's (Mulqueen's)
Three Steps Forward (Two Steps Back), written by Matt
The Torn Jacket

All three tunes have dots in the tune database here.

Enjoy it, all three are great players! It's one of my favorite sets. Download it and save it to your computer if you like, I'll take it off my server in about a week or when I hear from you that you've finished with it. :)

Re: getting the most from a workshop

Wow! How can I thank you enough Zina. I have downloaded, played it and can't wait to have the time to get to it. But as I said in the other thread, very very hard pressed for time this week till Saturday at least. Everything due on Friday (she says pulling her hair out). Then its a spot of house sitting for a friend and a tad of fiddlin about until July. Thanks, you are like the set: a gem!

Re: getting the most from a workshop

No troubles, Jill -- glad to share! Know exactly what you mean by pressed for time -- am running like the proverbial chicken round here myself, and since we haven't heard from Will much recently, I'd guess he's on deadline or vacation or something as well -- busy busy busy...

Re: getting the most from a workshop

Hmmm. Which browser are you using? Try getting the file going in your browser window, then look for a "save as" option.

Lucky you! Wanna come do some of my work? :)
