This for all you modal experts.I'm trying to practice back-up for tunes in the Dorian and Aeolian modes. But most tunes i come across seem to be either in the Ionian or Mixolydian. So can anyone give me the names of tunes in either of these modes.I'll need to work through a few in order to get the hang of them.Thanks.
for dorian mode: lots of Ador and Edor arround (check the tunes-section) sporadicly you'll find Bdor and Ddor, though not that much.
aeolian modes: just check for any 'minor' key ... (Emin, Amin, Bmin, ...)
I agree...lots of tunes are in E dorian/minor, A dorian/minor, and some B dorian floating around. You might consider going through the member's tunebook (click on members and then tunebook)...those are some of the most common tunes. Click on the name and it will tell you what key it's in. Right there on the first page, there are several tunes in minor and dorian:
Drowsy Maggie
Morrison's
Cooley's
Right of Man
Gravel Walks
Musical Priest
Kid on the Mountain
If you click on next, you'll find more tunes that are popular, and still more tunes in minor and dorian keys.
There are a lot of B minor (Aeolian) tunes which modulate up a minor 3rd into D major (Ionian) - also E minor to G major, A minor to C-major and a few D-minor to F major and G minor to B-flat major. (Examples: The Otter's Holt, Drag Her Round the Road). This is characteristic of the diatonic system (around which classical music is based) and is a useful thing to be aware of as a backer. It is often a key factor in distinguishing a tune in the Aeolian mode from one in the Dorian (which more often modulate down a tone - e.g Drowsy maggie, The Cup of Tea).

Re: Looking for tunes to fit the mode
Go the tunes section, click on the search tab, click on the "All Keys" drop down.
Lots of Dorian stuff in there.
