OK, here's a challenge: My wife and I (and the kids but ,oh,nevermind) were at the big end-of-the-week concert at the Willie in 2002 and were overwhelmed with all of the "fantastic" musicians and dancers--one after another after another for a few hours. There was a young woman with a beautiful voice who took the stage early in the evening and sang a ballad--unaccompanied--about the famine in Ireland and the Lord of the Manor who wouldn't help the starving people on his land. She finished the song with a verse bringing it right up to date and sang about how that experience should help the Irish to understand people in other countries in similar situations today. Although I'm not explaining this very well, the song and the singer were unforgettable. But before we could gather our wits to remember her name, another musician had taken the stage and then another, etc.
For almost three years we've been wondering who we heard. Is there anyone out there who knows?
I was there as well, and I found the list of singers that were performing on that Friday...Astrid Ní Mhóngáin, Margaret Bennett, Máire Ní Chéileachair, Peadar Ó Ceannabháin, Gabriel McArdle, Michael Marrinan, Máiread Ní Dhomhnaill, Máiread Stiubhart, Vincent Crowley, Meaití Joe Shéamuis.
I know it wasn't Margaret (one of my faves), and I don't recall if this list was in singing order or not. So that leaves you with four possible female singers. Sorry I don't have the answer, but perhaps I've narrowed it down a bit?? Cheers.
