Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Along the lines of the 'Mighty Craic Online' I've another proposition for you all. If individual players could submit a recording of the same tune or set, eg let's just say a popular reel - if they were to record it in standard pitch (tune their instrument with a tuner) and in contant time (played against eg a strict 120 bpm), and last but not least, play the tune in the same key - I could stitch the recordings together with my recording software and get a 'session'......then publish it somewhere on my site....taking advantage of modern technology, but keeping the music real. What say you all?

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

I think it would sound cool, except for the fact that how could be all send you our sound clips? I know Im absolutely ignorant about technology and I dont see how I could get the sound clip to you. Maybe others out their are as ignorant as I am. So I guess if you had exact instructions it might work.

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Ambitious. I suspect there'll be trouble with the accumulated ambient hiss, but I'm up for it. What'll you be using to mix it down?

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Sounds like an idea. The result will probably be... interesting. :)

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Anna - record on to a minidisc, or on to your PC through the soundcard using a microphone. The resulting files will likely be in WAV or MP3 format, you then e-mail them to me. You get my address when you're ready to send the files. You can email me through thesession mail (click on 'Jim Dorans', then click on 'send an email') if you want more specific advice. Anyone else got their own tips for recording?

Q - I can filter out the worst of the hiss if it's that bad - I'm using Cakewalk Home studio to record the accumulated tracks, and a 16-channel Alesis desk to monitor and mix. The final mix is bounced down to a stereo track, and saved as an mp3 file.

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Jim, I see you're very excited with the idea. You omitted some letters in the first post.

I think it's better someone posts a set of very standard tunes recorded in a steady rhythm first, and then others follow him or her. Maybe you can do it, Jim.

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

So - anyone wanting to take part, please suggest tune(s), agree on key, speed, number of times to play the parts etc...how about something really simple and well-known be the pilot, like :

McMahon's Reel (The Banshee), key of G, speed of 96 bpm (metronome mark of 96), play part A, part B, then part A, part B, then finish.

..........or............

Tobin's Favorite (Double jig), key of D, speed of 104 bpm, play part A, part B, then part A, part B, then finish.

...that sort of thing, just to see.

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Jim, would you record a guide track that we could perhaps play back to ourselves over headphones as we record? That way we can synch up groove-wise too - as well as make sure we're all playing the same tune!

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

That sounds so cool! I am definitely up for this! A guide track would be useful. McMahon's Reel here we come!

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

"im, would you record a guide track that we could perhaps play back to ourselves over headphones as we record?"

Yep, I've done a bit of multitrack by mail, and that's the way to do it. Someone has to go first and everyone else follows.

"I've mailed you McMahon's reel"

You might want to consider just putting it up on The Mighty Craic instead of having everyone shout "me too" and having to mail it to everyone interested.

And I see you've bumped the speed up. :)

OK, Ms Session Princess Zina? :-)

As for the backers, first come, first served, and space and time permitting, I could do different mixes if there is more than one
backing contributor.

Kerri, mines a pint of London Pride ale, dear. And be quick aboot it!! :-)

KFG mentioned about the speed - I tried to make halfway between slow session speed and Scottish speed - is it OK?

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Would it be bad form to ask for a wee bit of a slower pace? You see, the space-time down here around Table Mountain is a bit wonky, so what you guys play at a reasonable lick up there comes out #$%ing fast down here. No, seriously.

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Slower? No problem - it's up there now at 84 bpm.

Are we meant to do one at 84BPM as well now?
Can't we have a tune I like?

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

"Isn't this going to blow your cover - won't we recognise you from your playing?"

Naaaaaah! At least not unless you have a real taste for "old fashioned" playing (at a gig last night someone came up to me afterward to ask for my website address (don't got one. I['ve got the hosting space just sitting there empty) and told me he didn't know anyone even played like I do anymore, and he's a fine, multi-instrument musician himself. He seemed entranced. There's no accounting for taste), with a truely comprehensive recording collection (I've never released a solo album, and all the other stuff I've been on (often uncredited (how many parentheticals can I nest before I break the record?)) is out of print (Thank God) vinyl and tape of rather limited distribution in the first place. None of it is strictly ITM. Or even vaguely ITM.

I'm afraid I'm one of the lowest key solo performers you'll ever run across. I do little selfpromotion, hang in the back and just listen at sessions most of the time and prefer busking to club gigs. In fact virtually all of my formal gigs come from being solicited, rather than the other way around.

If you're thinking I'm some famous person traveling semi- incognito you can drop that idea, and I have no particular desire to be famous.

On the other hand If you've spent a lot of time on the American east coast (particularly the northeast. I've been around the world a bit, but that's my "stomping ground") there's a chance you might recognize me if you *saw* me. I stand out. From a distance. But it's my *singing* that's truely distinctive, not my playing (Ok, maybe my playing's distinctive too, but not for what I would consider the right reasons). I've got that "Best Singer" trophy I mentioned the other day, I've sung harmony for famous people and I've been told by a number of people that they can always find a workshop or songswap I'm running from half a mile away just by standing still and listening.

That's when I'm not being amplified. I've also been told I "project."

My favorite billing ever was "A tenor who doesn't suck". I love that. Makes me giggle. I like to giggle.

I've even been billed as a "legend" and a "treasure", and I'm often mistaken for someone who *is* famous (people kind of recognize me and so think I'm "somebody" and pull the "somebody" out of context, like when I was mistaken for James Taylor when I was having a chat with Livingston, or mistaken for Bill Staines when I was standing by his van waiting to have a chat with him), but really, even If I told you my name (I've already dropped that "K" is for Kevin) the odds of your recognizing it are pitifully small. I'm just "The guy with the pipe and the hat" (in Saratoga Springs that turns into a humorous "That pipe smoking son of a bitch") or maybe "The guy with the cool, beat-up old Washburn." Or sometimes "Sherlock Holmes."

And I like it that way. It affords me the sort of life I enjoy living.

Yeah, I know my profile is a bit on the coy side, but that' s just me. You'll note I'm perfectly (if by perfectly you mean "overly") loquacious in my posts.

"At least we'll find out WHAT you play . . ."

Well, in my posts I've already mentioned that I'm really just a guitar player, with a bit of whistle, oh and five string banjo, and a bit of. . .

Ok, I can bang out some sort of tune on every family of instrument but double reed (and I'll have to close that hole someday, but have you seen what even a student oboe costs?) and have played most of the individual members of the families a bit (koto and samisen are really cool). What I play depends on what I happen to possess at the moment. I always possess a guitar, a whistle, a recorder and usually some sort of small keyless flute (my quena's gone missing after a NYC gig though, and it was a real Indian made one brought back from Ecuador for me) and play them in about that order.

Instead of the complaint I've been expecting from my new, upstairs neighbor he went to the landlady and asked "How many instruments does Kevin play?"

I wouldn't say I'm of "International Standard" on any of them, but merely competent on a few. I get by well enough to keep rice in the bowl. I'm a better than average busker, but I get blown away by preteens all the time (ok, so one of them was named Mark O'Connor, but that's beside the point) and the guy who once compared my guitar playing to Norman Blake's was smoking something I don't want in *my* pipe. I've seen Norman play up close and personal like and I can't do anything like that. I finally spoke personally to my neighbor the other day and told him I hoped I wasn't driving him crazy by playing and singing at all hours. He told me, "Oh no. I like it. I haven't had to turn on my stereo for weeks."

He must know the "Norman Blake guy," or share the same supplier.

Anyone who says I can even actually play the fiddle (which includes some of my best friends) is just a lying bastard (I have an odd taste in friends).

I don't really play. Really.

I'm also told I drum like a banjo player. It was meant as a perjoritive (jokingly), although I actually think that's pretty cool, but as a fiddle player I make a good drummer who plays like a banjo player.

And besides, who said I was going to participate? : )

I just used up all the time I could have spent doing so writing this silly post.

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

You should post a link to this thread in your bio, Kevin.

That was a glorious development in my life - when the neighbours stopped banging on the wall with a broom handle to shut me up and started stopping me in the hall to tell me how enjoyable it is to hear me play.

Right, space-time's behaving this morning (or else my fingers are more limber today) so I've posted my McMahon's clips at both speeds.

My neighbours had also stopped complaining. Until two days ago, when I took up the fiddle by mistake. Man... bowing is *difficult* !!

Ottery and Q - you're up there now playing with me.

Everyone else - the site is called

The top list is the master version of tunes. Anyone who wishes can download and record their instrument using these to play with.

The lower list contains the results of the mixes, and who is playing on them.

Virtual session -Question on file formats

Just wondering if anyone out there could tell me what the difference is between mp3 and mpeg audio. Sometimes I download what is supposedly an MP3 but it becomes an mpeg audio on my computer.
I have problems then importing that format into Audacity or other programs as it doesn't seem to like that format. Can I just edit the file extension name to *.mp3 without it jumping up and grabbing me by the throat?
It will take me some time (home computer internet is down) but I will add accompaniment to some of these files when I get a chance and then it's up to Jim to decide what he does with them if he gets too many accompaniment offerings.
This is a great project - I take my hat off to you Jim.

The "mp" in mp3 stands for "mpeg." The "3" stands for "Audio Layer 3". Don't even think about asking what "mpeg" stands for. mp3s are mpeg audio.

Yea, you can hear Kerri's masterpiece, complete with sound effects, featured under my name on the "Mighty Craic On Line" page. After I drew fangs on her piccie, I wondered where she disappeared to for so long. I knew she was going to retaliate, but I had no idea it would involve so much time and effort... not to mention talent. She probably did it when she was supposed to be working.

I swear it only took me a half hour. OK, maybe a little longer to find a "SHADDUP!" MP3 download and exactly the right smashing glass effect. Revenge is sweet, but not THAT sweet.

And no, I wasn't supposed to be working at the time. NOW I'm supposed to be working. One must be subtle about these things. I think I'd blow my cover if I set up mic stands in my cubicle.

Cmon, the clip is what, 15 seconds long? Times (thinking) 6 instruments (7 if you count the bodhran). That's only a minute and 45 seconds of actual recording time. The other 28 and a quarter minutes I just spent giggling.

# Posted on February 1st 2005 by Kerri Brown

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

Then why were you gone so long? Certainly not because you were working -- we wouldn't believe that.

# Posted on February 1st 2005 by Phantom Button

Re: Vitual session - bringing all you guys together

No, I was in fact sort of working. but instead of making comments I was plotting and chuckling softly to myself. I had to wait 2 whole hours to finish work so I could come home and execute my little ploy. Then I only had a short window between the end of work and the Monday night session, so I had to be efficient.

It is true that finding sound effects online is time consuming. I might have to get a nice CD library so I can retaliate quicker next time.
