Session trail in Dublin

Session trail in Dublin

Hi all,

I just might end up in Dublin Paddy's Weekend (Thur 17th-Tue 22nd), and want to play as much as I possibly can, preferrably with others. I have looked through the session-listings for Dublin, but I can't imagine this will be a normal couple of days, so I wonder :

Anybody here playing sessions in Dublin in this period (and won't mind me tagging along)?

Anybody know about sessions that are not listed here, but will happen during Paddy's Weekend?

Any good tips on how to best enjoy one's Paddy's Weekend in Dublin beside playing sessions?

Anybody know how to get in touch with Dublin based fiddler Kevin O'Connor?( Off topic, I know....)

I'd love to meet up, and play tunes with people from thesession.org

Hughe's, a little pub right behind the Four Courts. Brilliant sessions every night that range from low key to very high level. You should go.

Re: Session trail in Dublin

the cobblestones in smithfield is a nice relaxed place for a session, with some top quality musicians, also gogarties in temple bar, the accessability of the session depends on the musicians, afternoon is probably best ......

The Cobblestones is like an Irish Trad Festival every weekend.

Re: Session trail in Dublin

There's a Paddy's Day parade, but I'd stay out of city center for the rest of it. Paddy's Day in Dublin is a crazy throng of tourists acting obnoxious. They really cater to the tourist's perception of cartoon Ireland. I would check with the pubs mentioned above beforehand, find out what time they start playing, and hide out there.

Re: Session trail in Dublin

I'd definitely recommend Hughes.' I've been to the Monday night and Tuesday night sessions there, and found the musicians to be very friendly and welcoming. I heard the Sunday session is where the real hotshots play, but I never had a chance to go then.

I also went to Cobblestones a couple of times. The Friday night session was great to listen to, but really crowded. (Peter Browne is my favorite box player!) :-)

There is not a lot of room there for musicians, so I'd say go early if you want a spot to play. Some of the musicians were nice there, but my general impression was that the ones at Hughes were more welcoming. The owner of the Cobblestone is Tom Mulligan, who is a really nice guy from a family of pipers, and I enjoyed chatting with him when I was there. Oh, and they also sell a cd that was recorded from different sessions there.

Re: Session trail in Dublin

I'd quadruple the rec's on Hughes and The Cobblestone but, you might give The Belfry a shout and see what's up there as well. Fairly new Fri night session that was loads of fun.
