Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
I'm looking for some recordings of ITM where there is a multi-instrument group where mandolin is both present AND playing melody. It being audible is a plus.
And no. Dervish doesn't count. As has been mentioned here before, Brian McDonagh certainly plays "a" melody while Dervish is playing. It's just not quite the same melody (and yet it blends in with the other music as if it were just another voice - Wow). Then again, that may be the key. Anyway...
Re: Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
:"Strings Attached" by Mick Moloney. 60% banjo lead 40% mandolin lead. Great ornaments and style in lovely sets of older tunes. Great stuff from a great guy.
Re: Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
I'll second and third the Mick Moloney recommendation. You can also find him on albums by the Irish Tradition. De Dannan's "Selected Jigs, Reels and Songs" has some nice mando stuff. Carolan's Draught is cool.
Re: Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
Shooglenifty are great but hardly Irish.
You can't do much better than check out Mick Moloney. Try also early Planxty recordings for Andy Irvine, Paul Brady etc. There's also "The Mandolin album" by Paul Kelly.
The Bumblebees recordings feature some nice mandolin and tenor banjo playing from Mary Shannon.
There's more but I've got to dash. Connecting with the celts through the west again.
Re: Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
Tim O'Brien's CD "The Crossing" has some nice mandolin. Mandolin is lead melody on "Kid On The Mountain." Tim O'Brien is better known as a bluegrass player, but "The Crossing" focuses on his Irish roots.
Re: Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
The Josephine Marsh Band features a few solos from mandolin whizzard Declan Corey. Some of Stocktons Wing's recordings feature Kieran Hanrahan on mandolin.
Re: Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
A couple of the recent La Bottine Souriante cds feature some rockin' mandolin playing as well. Not Irish, but a reasonable facsimile thereof, and very audible.
Re: Multi-Instrument Recordings where Mando Plays Melody
Has anyone tried regular mandolin with octave mandolin/bouzouki/cittern? Listening to Dervish leaves me wanting to hear more teams of players with a two string per course instruments.

Anything by Shooglenifty. Check out "The Arm's Dealer's Daughter". Great mandolin throughout.

Try to find a copy of the first Touchstone album ... don't know if it has been re-issued as a cd. Claudine Langille's mando playing is terrific!

There's some nice mando playing scattered around some of Cherish the Ladies' stuff. There's one great track of mando playing on this one:
