Australians on this web site

Australians on this web site

This is a great web site, and I am really pleased to be part of it. However, on reading postings to this discussion it seems that the majority of people are in the USA, with some in the UK. Many of you seem to know each other and get a chance to listen to each other or play together.
Unfortunately, living in Australia (Adelaide) I'm not part of this inner circle. It would be nice to find people here who I would have realistic chance of catching up with (eg, at the Australian National Folk Festival, in Canberra, at Easter).
Are there any Australians out there?

Re: Australians on this web site

Yep! There are quite a few, and there are some really nice friendly people and sessions in Adelaide (check out the sessions section). You might also consider heading up the Stuart Highway for The Top Half Folk Festival on the Queen's B'day Weekend in June. It's going to be held at Glen Helen, outside Alice Springs this year, I hear tell.
Cheers

Re: Australians on this web site

Look left in the distance you'll see Perth. There's a few of us here who occasionally frequent this mustard board.
I have been to Sydney to catch up with Dow and BB at a session. I don't think there is any amazing inner circle that I am aware of.
"Bren" has just been through with his amazing Mandolin but he lives in Scotland - just travels around a lot.
Just do a search of members profiles and include the word Australia. You might be suprised how many there are. However it is true that this website is heavily weighted to the North American region. Not that I have a problem with that☺ - just means that I am not usually on line when all the messages are flying too and fro.
Anyway I will not be at the National this year - maybe next year.

Re: Australians on this web site

There's a couple of us over here on the right - I know 'keyedup' inhabits these parts (no sightings for the last two weeks for some reason) so that makes at least two of us.

I'm hoping to make the National this year since I've never been. Woodford over the New Year has whet my appetite. Hopefully I'll see you there! But be warned - I'm an engineer as well.

Eno ;-)

Re: Australians on this web site

I don't think there's an inner circle Sokol. I didn't know anyone to start with but just look up the session list for where I'm going or email Australian based members such as Donough and they've all been welcoming.

I think Australia is pretty well represented on here actually.

Adelaide's reportedly got a pretty lively folk scene - there used to be a Friday night session at the Gov Hindmarsh.

Re: Australians on this web site

Sorry, I wasn't complaining! Adelaide is certainly well served for sessions (I know of at least one every night except Saturday. The Dan O'Connell session is going as I write). I was just following a couple of interesting threads on the site and felt frustrated that all the input was coming from people in the USA who appeared to know each other.
I guess I'll just pipe down and watch for a while. At least I've got 4 new names to look out for. May pick up a few more if I get to Canberra.

I don't know him, but I once got headbutted by a woman from Vicky Park in the Como Pub. Mistake she said.

Here he is here: http://www.boxingforfitness.com.au/abouttommy.html

Re: Australians on this web site

Alright, here's along shot! Four of us who work at the Mawson Lakes campus of the Uni of SA have set up a small (tiny) lunch-time session on Wednesdays. We are 2 whistles (one alternates with bodhran), a fiddle and a flute. Last year we had a guitar, but he has been promoted and is now too busy (priorities!). We are very much beginners but would love to have some more in the group. Any takers?

Re: Australians on this web site

Sounds right up my alley, Sokol. Only trouble is I'm in Sydney :-(

Re: Australians on this web site

Pity, Tish, but you are somewhat geographically challenged for this session! I took the liberty of looking in your songbook. Nice selection! I'm waiting to get the latest version of Garage Band (to be released by Apple tomorrow) and will then start building mine.

Re: Australians on this web site

Heh. Bear in mind that my tunebook is a twenty-year plan, Sokol, not a current reality! (Me too in the engineering department.)
