hey. i've just started up a band which with accordion, double bass, bouzouki, fiddle and percussion and playing newly composed music as well as older stuff. we've just finished a c.d. but we've been so busy concentrating on music that we need a name quick and as none of us are in anyway poetic so a bit of inspiration from ye clever guys would be much appreciated!
Try doing a Search under Discussions for “band names”.
You’ve got to be careful that you’re not accidentally taking a name that’s already been registered or is in use, or using a word or phrase that’s a Trade Mark. Choosing a name of a tune as a name for a band is often a fairly safe bet.
Trevor
All decent band names begin with "The" and end with "-s". (Just like all Hollywood romantic comedies between 1998 and 2002 were called "[insert verb of choice]-ing [insert female name of choice]".) Using "The [?] -s" will give you instant credibility as a Talented Band that is Going Somewhere. The [?] can be practically any word you can think of. Verbs, nouns, adjectives, you name it. I recommend sticking your finger into a dictionary at random. In fact, I have one here. I'll do it for you. OK, the first word I got was "tragédie" (it's French / English dictionary - let me try the English side). OK. I got "manager", "keg", "loggerheads", and "frustration". All perfectly serviceable band names. In fact, I think "The Loggerheads" has serious potential. Or, if you play grunge, you could use "The Frustrations". "The Managers" sounds too much like the name of an Asian gang of white collar criminals than a band.
I've been accused of having the soul of a poet, and it's even been suggested that I should become one (perish the thought). Not too long ago someone on another forum was soliciting suggestions for naming his trombone quartet.
I came up with "The Sussurant Sackbutts" and got awarded the "Most Poetic" suggestion prize, but I think he went with "The Four Hornsmen of the Apocolypse," which was actually my favorite as well.
Anyway, thing is, us poetic types have to know something about you to do our thing.
I knew someone else had been doing my thinking. All my ideas have this musty, peculiar smell on them by the time they get to me... It's not fair. Can anybody suggest an original thought for me to think?
"You can ask aaaany giiiirl from the paaaarish around
what pleases her most from her head to her toees
She'll say "I'm not sure if it's business of yours
But I do like to dance with a log driver,,,,"
(That song is going to be stuck in my head for another four months now. And just when I thought I was over it...)
"Can anybody suggest an original thought for me to think?"
Everything has already been though of. The trick is to think of it again. -- Gothe
(He quipped between gigs as he rushes into the house to drop off his fiddle and pick up his guitar and sticks. The sticks in this case being knitting needles, not bows. I'm playing for the "Chicks with Sticks," a knitting circle, who asked me to bring along my own knitting as well. I'm going to be a "Chick" with sticks. Not to be confused with a "Chick with a kickstand," which is something entirely different. I get weird gigs sometimes)
Well, I hesitate to offer the suggestion, because I might like to use it myself someday, but if I had a band like yours I'd call it The Sons of Mil, which by Google search appears to be untaken.
Then you could do a "Battle of the Bands" gig with De Dannan.
altan is definitely taken. i went through a very similar thing with my band. we decided on "shillelagh law". we know there are at least three other bands with that name. but they live in alabama, nebraska, and missouri, so we dont bloody care! oi! haha.
my god! i leave ye for under a day and look what ye come up with!! do ye not have jobs! well, i'm from some unknown place called donegal so alot of the older stuff is unheard donegal music i.e. stuff that altan didn't record yet. the music that i've composed although in a traditional vein explores new ways of looking at music and may include unusual chord sequences and different ways of arranging music but it's very subtle so at times you need to be listening!!!
so after reading that i have to take my hat(imaginary) off to fyfer guy for soundscape. i love that name; i wrote a piece once called dreamscape so maybe we're thinking on parrallel lines. an idea i had for the c.d./band was deep waters but then i thought that was a wee bit cheesy so i'm relying on ye!
anyhow, ye're all a very imaginative bunch so keep the suggestions coming and if i use anything, i'll send ye a copy of the c.d (and of course credit ye for the title) after the proposed launch in may.
keep it coming!
p.s. dodec's greatest hits vol. 1 is NOT an option!!!!!!!
Well, seeing as you're Irish, I guess you'll have to apply my method to an Irish dictionary and leave out the "the" and the "...s" (as Altan, Dannu, Clannad and countless others before you have done.) I can do this for you as well as soon as I get home from work. :^)
Thanks for the tip, dodec! It really was purely random hungry-brained verbal diarrhea.
As far as "do any of us work", I for one have been housebound for two days after receiving at leat 2 1/2 feet of snow in 24 hours (I live in the Northeast US). I just shoveled for 3 hours, and made a seven foot high snow pile at the corner of my driveway, from which I intend to carve a cave for my children to play in. (OK, so that's a bit OT). Anyway, dodec, good luck w/ the band. I'd love to hear a sound clip if you've got one -- give one to the mightycraic online if you can (see this thread for details: http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display.php/5539)
"i have to take my hat(imaginary) off to fyfer guy for soundscape. i love that name"
Yeah, and so does everybody else. If you Google on it you'll get nearly a half million hits, a good many of which are for music software packages, stereo stores, sound reenforcement firms and . . . bands.
It's quite possibly the most cliche name in the entire music biz.
My friend invented an online band name / tune name generator once, but it seems to be defunct. Let's all heave a big communal sigh of disappointment, everybody.
I've been through the tunes with the band of no name,
it felt good to be out of the rain
In the tunes, ya can't remember the name

Give us some titles of your compositions, and that may help us come up with a name for you.

But we don't know if they're playing trad Irish or what, John. Tune names are good for trad bands, but not fusion bands... I think.

I used an online band name generator for a ska-punk group that had a once-off gig, and came up with a brilliant name on the first go...
*Sniff the Deputy*
Inspired by the name, we even did a skewed version of the Bob Marley song "I shot the sheriff". What a gig that was.
But my favourite band name I've come up with so far (which you can't have 'cos it's MINE damnit, MINE) is...
(drumroll)
*Folk of the Latter View*
boom boom!
