Text Messages to Ireland from the US!

Text Messages to Ireland from the US!

Hello - I have a Nextel cell phone (a higher end model) and have been doing some text messaging to friends over in Ireland. But sometimes the service is really terrible. For the past four days, I haven't been able to receive or send texts overseas. I called tech support and was told there was a power outage in a data server or something like that. What the heck?? That's unacceptable and totally unreliable!

I'm organizing a few concerts here in Vermont and trying to coordinate things with musicians overseas and it's really great to be able to text back and forth! But right now I'm ready to throw my damn phone out the window! :-)

So I'm seriously looking into switching my service to another company. Who here from the US does a lot of texting to Ireland?? How's the service? Who would you recommend? I don't mind paying extra for some decent service!

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Joyce

Re: Text Messages to Ireland from the US!

Hi Joyce, I use Cingular and I've had no problem texting pals over there. I'm not doing it as much as you, but I've never had an interruption. Aren't your friends on line? Couldn't you also email them?

Yeah I use email too. But texting is great when you can't get to your computer.

Hey we've got these really cool things called digital cameras too, coming to the US soon!

Bren, in the new kind of camera - the digital ones - you’ll find that the pixy uses a pointillist technique to paint the picture, whereas in the old-fashioned ones the little fella would paint with full strokes of the brush.

Re: Text Messages to Ireland from the US!

Finally! Something I know a little bit about....

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when it comes to international (GSM-based) texting:

1) If you are texting international, you are using a network type called GSM, which has almost complete everywhere in the world except the US and Japan.

2) Even though your phone says you have a signal, you may not be on a genuine GSM network, which may lead to the message delivery being delayed, or in worse case, failure.

3) If you are in New England, you are going to be particularly affected by the valleys. GSM networks require lots of towers to overcome their broadcast radius limitations. Generally speaking, you are going to have a hard time finding that kind of saturation outside of NYC or Boston in the Northeast (yes, I know NYC is not in New England...)

4) No one in the US does a really good job implementing GSM networks. Best I have experienced is Seattle.

hope that helps,
cp

Re: Text Messages to Ireland from the US!

Joyce; Cingular is good as it is part of the Vodafone network.
if you can get one of yer Irish friends to buy you a O2 sim card for €10 and then register it you can send 250 free texts messages from the o2 website http://www.o2.ie then have them reply to your US number or get someone to buy you a vodafone sim and do the same from http://www.vodafone.ie

i have friends in US & Canada who can succesfully send sms from Cingular and Rogers to my O2 irish number, my irish vodafone number will only send to Rogers & not receive ..i can also send and receive from Mcell.

Actually, in case anyone is interested, you can text to Ireland using Verizon Wireles. They are partners with Vodafone which explains the reason it's been pretty reliable. I just got a new phone yesterday. So far so good!

DeffGoat, Cingular hasn't come to VT yet. I hear it's good though.
