Hi there. im well on my way to purchasing uillean pipes. ive been saving for about 8 months now and now comes the looking for a maker step. does anyone know of any pipe makers in the twin cities area? Also, has anyone bought from seth gallagher? if so, were you happy with them? if im going to order pipes from the internet id like to get quite a few good reviews about them.
Dirk, our piper, just got a set from Seth. He likes them very much, although he's been going through travails with his reeds in the dry weather we've been having.
Seth is one of the most highly acclaimed makers I have never seen anything of his live in person but it is apparently excellent. Go to the Uilleann Pipe fourm at chiff and fipple http://www.chiffandfipple.com that is a better place to ask this question than here.
You can't go wrong with David Boisvert- greenwood pipes. Check uilleannobsession.com for references.
I f you are in the twin cities; check the Great Northen Pipe Club; they have a tionol in May that shouldb e a lot of fun. Try Joe kenndy as well ( I believe he is in Montral???- someone correct me); another good maker from the example that I saw.
Seth Gallagher-I've borrowed a full set from one of the guys in our club to check out; very nice workmanship and playability.
Check out the waiting list with any maker you contact. Some makers are booked up for five or more years, and some have even stopped taking orders.
I've heard great things about Seth's pipes, but also Rogge in Germany, Rob Moore in Vancouver Island, and others. Ray Sloan in Northumberland made each of the three bellows pipes I play. I am very happy with the sound as well as the craftsmanship and customer service. The state of the dollar is terrible on buying from overseas, though. Luckily there are good makers in North America, like Greenwood, mentioned above, and Bruce Childress in Maine (?) and others.
I have played a flat set from Andreas Rogge for the past few years. He delivered the set by courier to me in Ireland and they came out of the box in perfect tune!
His reeds have also proven to be very stable, which would help any beginner concentrate on their playing rather than battling with the reeds.
Like has been said above, David Boisvert is very close to the twin cities area and makes very good pipes at a good price, with a very short waiting list compared to other pipemakers. I'm planning on getting a set from Greenwood pipes in parts as I have the money to do so. But it is very helpful to choose a pipemaker that's close to your location for assistance (reed trouble, etc.). Well have fun with the set from whichever maker you choose.
I've played many a Gallagher set over the past few years and all are of impeccable workmanship and quality. The reeds do sometimes go south, but for anyone willing to do a little homework, and be patient enoughto learn reed mannerisms, that shouldn't be a problem - in fact, I think it is an essential part of learning to play the pipes.
I just got my very own Seth chanter a few days ago without a reed, and was able to reed it and get it playing in a matter of hours - an I am in NO way an expert reed maker. In fact, the Chieftains are in town over the weekend, and I had some time with Paddy last night (He's played a Rowsome full set for years and years and just about a year ago got a full set from Seth as well). He was having some troubles too, due to the cold and such I believe. Anyway, I lent him my own chanter and reed and we'll see what he says tonight.
But I would Say that for price, quality, short lead time, and impeccable service, Seth Gallagher is your dude. Although David there at Greenwood pipes is a strong contender. See what each can do for you, look at lead times, and then you may find that you're just choosing one or the other based on chanter design or key options - the small stuff. Whatever you do, the sooner you get on a list, the sooner you'll hvae your set.
I will be getting Greenwood Pipes when I buy my set but that is more because of a price issue they were recommended by somone on C and F. If money and time is no issue go for Seth's but if yu'd prefer to save a couple months and $$ go with Greenwood. Usually my questions on C & F are answered and by more people than if I asked them here but they also tend to go way off topic sometimes..
I thought he just wasn't taking new orders on regs? That would be impressive if his list had grown long enough that new orders had to cease. He does great work though and deserves to have a long list to reflect such a fact!
I was also going to suggest the Geoff Wooff set on the NPU website but I have no idea what your budget is , or whether you are looking for a practice, half or full set. You might get them for a bit less than the price listed above , it would save you the waiting time & you would have an amazing full set , but like I said I have no idea of your budget or type of set required. There's also an Andreas Rogge full set in B on there which I have been dreaming about since I saw them advertised but unfortunately I cannot afford them ! They are going for 6000 euro or nearest offer,
I've a half set of McFadden pipes for sale recently renovated.
Origionally bought from( Big) Denis Calvert from N. Co Down in early 70's but hardly played ever since.
They are NOT in perfect pitch I've been told, gut then I'm not looking for a perfect price just a fair one and more especially a good home.

Last I heard, Jeff, isn't Kirk not taking any orders right now? I think that's why Dirk got a set from Seth...
