Sort of. It's in 9/8. "Jesus and Mary and Joseph, and Jesus and Mary and Joseph," is the way Michael Bolton says the rhythm, which cracks me up every time. Take a look at the music for The Butterfly in the tunes section, or any of the slip jigs, for that matter.
"They are only supposed to be danced by females." Historically, yes, but right now they're being danced by beginner through Novice/Prizewinner boys. My theory is that this is because the slip jig has become more and more difficult and athletic as the dance has become a sport as well as a dance form. ;)
The way I've always heard it, a hop jig is to the slip jig, is what the single jig is to the regular jig -- more of a DAH-di DAH di DAH di kind of thing, rather than that didle-ee diddle-ee thing. Do a search on hop jig, I think I remember someone (Harry Bradley? Emily quoting Harry Bradley?) talking about it.
Nil : SAT - is : NI - si : OPT - ti - MUM Sort of polka feel to it?
2 : 1 2 : 1 2 : 1 2 : 1 2
(At least if you are a Scouser!) Actually OPT gives you a dotted quaver!
Point taken about younger boys dancing slip jigs these days...maybe I should have inferred traditionally danced by girls.
Incidentally, slip jigs played slightly off the pace make for some beautiful tunes interpretations. So many seemed to like Trip to Durrow here's what I think is one of the great tunes, "Another jig will do". Give that a try but give it space and time for the notes (especially 2nd part C naturals!) to swell.
Enjoy!
Zina, that would make the world's number one absolutely most famous if-you-only-know-one-slip-jig slip jig (the Butterfly) a hop jig. How disastrous. Now we'll have to find a genuine slip jig to murder with overexposure.
I heard that 'poly-be-elze-bub, etc' business was supposed to be sung to 'The Irish Washer Woman' to help chemistry students remember the name for tests. I think it's hilarious.
What's a Slip Jig?
What's a Slip Jig?
I assume that the slip jig is a deviation on the straight jig, what’s the difference?

Cheers Zina, that is a great way to remember how it goes.

Re: What's a Slip Jig?
Oh, Michael does lovely mnemonics or however you spell that. My favorite is his one for the reel:
"This is a rhythm that the Irish call a reel
and you can tell it from a jig because it has a different feel..."
# Posted on January 12th 2005 by Zina Lee
Re: What's a Slip Jig?
My favorite mnemonic for reels is still "watermelon, watermelon."
# Posted on January 12th 2005 by MacTireRua
Re: What's a Slip Jig?
Does watermelon translate into Irish as Diddlediddle Diddlediddle?
Brianx
PS Slip jigs are 9/8 as stated above.
They are only supposed to be danced by females.

Re: What's a Slip Jig?
In our house with 5 and 8 year old girls, it's "alligator alligator" for reels and "Lydia Lydia" for jigs in homage to our youngest.

Re: What's a Slip Jig?
"angela lansbury's hernia" for slip-jigs

Paradiethylaminobenzaldehyde, wash it all down with a dose of insecticide...
