Dr Gilbert. One tune I did not like but cannot get enough of - and it gave me an excuse for a terrible paraphrase of that badly dated sixties 'comedy'.
Bluebell Polka! Daft tune, not great on the ear but fun to play on the fiddle or accordion. There's definitely something cheery about playing it and a session without it is only 99% of the fun.
So, any tune you did not care for at first but learned to accept and even love? At least one response would be great!
There are a lot worse tunes than the BB polka. I've been to some sessions where they've comprised the whole evening's repertoire.
I'm not sure if I've learned to love them or not, though.
I used to hate the Mooncoin Jig until I heard Paddy Glackin play it. Prior to that, I would play along casually if someone started it. Afterwards, I would start it out with gusto.
Pull the knife Out And stick it In Again.
I never 'got' the tune until I heard it as part of the Na Dorsa Set (With The Girl Of The House and The Lisheen Jig) - and now I just love playing it...
Oops. There it is. Shouldn't have limited the search to polkas. Thank you. I see it has quite a bit of history to it. Didn't mean to bring that all back.
I lurk days at a time but somewhat sporadically, so I missed it.
I think Langstrom's Pony grows on you the more you play it.
I thought the session formerly known as Shillelagh's was going to become one of the disparu, in order to avoid the current Sarf London sh*tehawk infestation? Or is that too negative an interpretation of reality?
Well Orson, the people who turned up last time have gone back north, and the spoiler had to pay for his drinks that nights, so he's unlikely to be back. I've just posted a comment on the Blythe session webpage and realised I HAD TYPED THE TITLE IN CAPITALS!!!!!!!!!

Re: DR GILBERT, OR "HOW I LEARNT TO LOVE..."
I tried to find the Bluebell polka in the tune list but it's not there. Perhaps someone could submit it.

Re: DR GILBERT, OR "HOW I LEARNT TO LOVE..."
Some time ago, I didn't like:
The Blackbird, when I played it.
Lark in the morning, before I started to play it.
Taylor Bar 4 AM, for the first 20 listenings.

Re: DR GILBERT, OR "HOW I LEARNT TO LOVE..."
It's already there as "The Bluebell Polka Barndance".

Oh, let's not start that one again.

"I think Langstrom's Pony grows on you the more you play it."
There's a new treatment nowadays, and you can have it removed if it's caught early enough. Still no cure for the Jig of Slurs though.

OH MY GOD ORSON! YOU'RE RIGHT, MOST OF MY POSTS ARE IN CAPITAL LETTERS.
(whispering now) are you coming to Shillelagh's this Saturday?

Re: DR GILBERT, OR "HOW I LEARNT TO LOVE..."
Dr Gilbert is one of my current loves, for what it's worth. As played by Michael Coleman, anyway.
Jig of Slurs is a Scottish pipe tune that I also love, but trying to play it in an Irish style ruins it, in my opinion.
