As of today, 21 Dec., 2004, the bridge is free!! Well done to local MSP JF Munro. Should there be a health warning issued - these Sgitheanach's can be a bit infectious with their craic!! Ceilidh on the Bridge on Hogmonay?
Paddy - D'you reckon the Mallaig ferry will continue running? I really want to know, because otherwise it's about 150 miles to the bridge. What's the word on the street?
Good question. This shouldn't affect the Mallaig ferry. What will affect it is the way the govt interprets and chooses to enforce EU guidelines. At the moment ways of privatising CalMac (the ferry operator) are being looked at. I suggest another discussion be started re this tho'.
I got carried off the Mallaig/Skye ferry on a stretcher because of the sudden recurrence of a previous spinal injury (nothing to do with CalMac).
As I lay there being shot full of morphine on the stretcher with all the other vehicles going past, the thing I wanted most in all the world was for someone to tell everyone that I wasn't seasick!
All this misery for nine years, it's great news for the Islanders - did not realise that bridge had been there so long.
I remember that the design was turned down for London but deemed acceptable for the west of Scotland.
How did the shop keepers of Kyle of Lochalch and Kyleakin fare with the bridge? I suppose they all closed down since nobody had to stop there anymore.
An interesting article about this Bridge headlined 'a scandal of secrecy and profligacy' by George Monbiot in today's (28/12/04)Guardian newspaper (You can read it at www.guardianonline.co.uk or www.monbiot.com). What is good news for the Skye residents and visitors is bad financial news for the taxpayers - £15m worth of bridge for £93m. Maybe some of the missing money could have gone to ferry services?
