A cousin of mine is just starting on the old goat and I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for an artist/ recording that particularly highlights some stellar drumming...
John Joe Kelly is an amazing bodhran player who features on many CDs, but to mention 2 recordings with his band Flook (www.flook.co.uk) Rubai and Flatfish are both great CDs and he is an inspiration to many bodhran players.
I'd agree about Johnny McDonagh. He's played on the two Mary Bergin albums (Feadoga Stain 1 and 2) which are well worth a listen.
And Colm Murphy's "An Bodhrán" is a cracker.
And if you want to go completely mad there's the double album "Pure Bodhrán" that's lots of different players playing in all sorts of musical contexts, not just pure ITM.
Mise have a very good bodhrán player (can't think of his name at the moment). He gave a wonderful solo performance at Mise's gig at the Irish Centre in London a three months ago. If he doesn't have a solo track on their cd then I think that should be rectified next time round.

Second step: Frank Torpey - he has published bodhran tutor with madfortrad, Jim Higgins, Mel Mercier and Robbie Harris.
Then he can listen to guys who play top-end style, like John Joe Kelly and Junior Davey - I especially recommend Skin and Bow album with Junior Davey - he plays there with a fiddle player, sorry but I don't remember his name.
He should listen to Pure Bodhran - 2 CD's album with a lot of different bodhran players.
About that bodhran player from Mise, he doesn't have a solo track on their album but you can find a short movie with his solo on Phil Hardy's website www.kerrywhistles.com in download section.

When I started playing, I practiced alongside the early Chieftains Albums. They are playing in a goof speed, and both Peadar Mercier and Kevin Conneff are good players.

All of the above, especially JJ Kelly. There is some wonderful playing on the trad tracks of Eileen Ivers "Crossing the Bridge". Teada have an excellent bodhran player too.

Geezer about your age, give or take 5 years...phenomenal accompaniment in seshs in Babbity Bowsters and a few times at the Halt in Byres Road when it was going...oops..silly Jim...just realised he's maybe not on CD...oh well......
Bestcraic: Go to Brenden White's Bodhran Website, go to media, then audio, the Old Hag at the Churn. Johnny McDonnagh and Mary Bergin doing the best of all of their many reels together. Also try Feodoga Stain 1 and 2. Johnny did two albums with Arcady, the second being exemplary. Also try "On Horseback" with Eileen Ivers. I love Tommy Hayes, but no one has captured his genius on CD yet. Go to his tutorial videotape. He does "Moving Clouds" with banjo player Gerry O'Connor (of Four Men and a Dog). This is jaw dropping stuff. He is on the DVD "Gael Force" with Altan. Frank Torpey with the two Nomos CD's is fantastic. He has a MadForTrad Bodhran Tutorial CDrom at their website. John Joe Kelley with Flook has an amazing range with Celtic Fusion style in their Rubai album. Kevin Conneff is on the Chieftains DVD "Water from the Well." The Donnegal Set with a Cheiftains and Altan jam session is excellent. He is also on the "Gael Force" DVD with an unforgettably wild piece with Ashley McIsaac playing fiddle while dancing a jig. Donnchadh Gough has an interesting slap tone style with Danu through all of their albums. Enjoy!

Don't know how to get hold of recording if any but Martin McHugh, Brendan's brother is pretty useful. Was based in Glasgow but now in Ireland.
