Sessions/Teachers in/or around Annapolis, MD

Hello all
I have been enjoying the posts, music, and comments for the past few months. This is my first post, and I want to know if any of you out there have any info on sessions or teachers around Annapolis, Maryland. I have been playing Irish flute for the past nine months with a couple of friends and we want more information on how to do it the right way. I have casually been playing the whistle over the past seventeen years. I've finally been struck to where I want more information and to learn from others. Any assistance you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and keep making the beautiful music.

Phillipe Varlet is in your area, he can point you in the right direction.

Laura Byrne is a lovely flute player living in Baltimore. She can usually be found at the J.Patrick's session on Thursday nights in Baltimore. I can't remember exactly where J Patrick's is cos it's been ages since I've been there. Myron Bretholz is a bodhran player/tune guru living around Balto as well, he'd definitely be able to help you out.

There is a session every Tuesday night at Sean Donlon's, on West Street. It starts about 9:00, and is led by Doc Botzer. The regulars are great musicians and really make you feel at home. The times I have been there, the bar has been pretty crowded, but a lot of the punters actually stop drinking and talking to enjoy the music. Wish I could get up there more often!

Whoops, almost forgot. Rob Greenway is an excellent teacher, and a lot of fun, though he is in DC. I could give you his old phone number, but he has since moved to Charlottesville, and back, so it's surely not the right number. Instead, look him up on his website, Rob Greenway's Irish Flute Pages, and contact him on his link there.

Doc is the man! I used to go to the sessions all the time at Donlon's, but the drive is too much since I changed jobs. As a matter of fact, in late June, Doc will be giving workshop in Gettysburg called "Session 101" where he will explore the different tune types, to be followed by a session that will end whenever everyone has had enough (camping space available) .. J. Pat's in Baltimore has a Monday night "re-sessiun". for beginning session players.. Get there around 8pm, or so.. It usually ends around 10:30, so you get home for bed at a reasonable hour..

Re: Sessions/Teachers in/or around Annapolis, MD

Dear Bai,

Sean Donlon's, and its Tuesday night session, is on West street in Annapolis, just a half block or so from Church Circle.

If you are coing from Rt. 50, take the Rowe Blvd. exit into town, take a right at the end, which leads you directly to Church Circle. The right hand turn onto West Street is your second turn off Church Circle. You'll see the Ram's Head on the left, and then Sean Donlon's. If you see a parking place, grab it!

We've moved to Castlebay, half a block down Main St. from Church Circle. Much nicer place!
