well...in addition to the advice given there, I've put together a video clip to demonstrate two common rolls. It's at
http://www.worldfiddlemusic.co.uk/ ...click on 'Fiddle Technique Tips', then scroll down to video. The clip may not work in streaming mode, but if you download it, it should play in Windows media player.
Jim's fiddle rolls video clip is called BM1, and it's 7.5MB in size, which may take a while to download if you're on dialup (and, BTW, is it my imagination, or is the internet getting slower these days?)
I find it's best to right-click on BM1 (or any other file download for that matter) and then chose Save Target As ... (if you're using IE) or Save Link As ... (if you're using the superior and faster Mozilla Firefox). Then you'll be asked where you want the file saved.
Good work, Jim!
Trevor
I'm trying to get the .avi format converted to something more standard (like Flash or mpeg) to make streaming possible, and more compatible with other systems. All I can find at the moment are free downloads of converters which splash the company's website address across the middle of the window in which the video clip is being played!
Jerry, both are possible, and sound different. On a 1st finger roll, I prefer to use the 2nd finger for the high note.
Two reasons : as an ornament it's physically and musically closer to the main note, secondly, the 2nd finger is the strongest finger and makes it 'tighter' and can give more of a 'punch' to the whole thing.
Trevor, I figure it's like microwaves. Once upon a time, we all had to actually cook our food, and you'd wait impatiently for it to be done so you could eat 45 minutes later. Then someone invented those boil-in bags and tinned food and ready made meals that you could bake in foil trays, and we waited impatiently for 15-30 minutes so we could eat, drumming our fingers on the kitchen counter. Then we invented the microwave, so now we can drum our fingers on the counter in front of the microwave for 30 seconds to five minutes.
At least now it's cooler while you drum.
(Oh god, I mentioned drums, does this mean Michael Gill will now chime in with one of his diatribes?! ;)
Zina, if I have the choice of cooking something for 35 mins in the oven or 5 mins in a microwave I'll almost always use the oven - if only because it warms up the kitchen in this cold weather
BTW, sorry I can't advise about browsers for the (i)Mac. Thanks to some very strange marketing and pricing policies by Apple in Europe and the UK a couple of decades ago they left the market over this side of the Pond wide open to the IBM PC and its clones. Hence the (i)Macs aren't as common as they should be in the UK.
Trevor
Yes, but you're a Luddite! ;) I'll choose whatever way gets me food the fastest, generally. But yeah, sometimes there's no substitute for an oven!
I've been using Mozilla on my PC laptop, Firefox and Thunderbird. (Who thinks up these names?) Stellar. Free downloads. Go get 'em. Pete uses Safari on his Mac. Does that help? ;)
Maybe we should change the name of this thread to Bread Rolls (2) - oven bake or microwave? Yea, girlie, trust you to bring up the subject of food! Now I'm hungry and the cupboard's empty, the chip shop's closed, the microwave needs cleaning....
Jim, did ya get the file?? I sent a wmv format of your avi (love those acronyms) via your email @ worldmusic etc. If not, I can resend. The file is 1.5mb and on 2 systems runs fine.
Ok, so maybe I should have sent croissants or some such! You deserve it for this fabulous tool you are sharing!
There's another one up there now - shows fully-bowed&fingered triplets.

Re: Fiddle Rolls (2)
Jim, thats great. I wish that had been available when I first tried to do rolls.
Do you always use the 2nd finger as the high note on a 1st finger roll? I've been trying using the 3rd finger but still find the 2nd easier.

They are great little illustrations.
Now I can play the rolls, all I have to do is learn to play the fiddle - look out Frankie Gavin!

Hi Deb,
Many thanks for doing the file conversion. I'll put it up on the site this evening - see how it goes for streaming!
Cheers!

Are we going to see a slowed-down version of a 500 frames/sec video of the famous Tommy Peoples crunchy triplets?
