Johnny Cunningham

Johnny Cunningham

The anniversary of Johnny's passing is upon us (December 15). I still get unbearably sad when I think about it. But I know he's still burning up a fiddle somewhere. We miss you Johnny.

Re: Johnny Cunningham

Aye
I was thinking about him last night and listened again to his Winters talisman concert from the Kennedy centre last Dec 3rd , its very moving listening to this now and realising how little time he had left and yet his humour is so infectious and the music is magnificent.
For those who don't know ......here's the link ......just search for Johnny Cunningham and you'll get a few gigs.

Re: Johnny Cunningham

There's a lot of good stuff on that site. I was
watching a Lunasa gig earlier today.
Johnny's gig from 3rd Dec 2004 is there so I'll give this one a go later.

Re: Johnny Cunningham

Yeah, I was listening to Winter Talisman and also to Peter and Wendy last night. Sad that so creative a man had so short a life. (And no snarks about him doing it to himself, thank yez. It's still a waste.) I'm going to raise a B&B in his honor Wednesday noght.

The thing that gets me is what he said leaving the stage at the end of his last performance --- one of his black humor moments. He gave what he described as a "traditional Scottish Christmas greeting" : We're born in pain, we live in fear, and we die alone. Happy Christmas.

Three days later he was gone.

Rest well, Johnny. You left a lot of love behind.

Re: Johnny Cunningham

I checked that link out. He didn't waste any time with the humor. Listening and looking at him, it was pretty obvious he wasn't well. He was out of breath after walking onto the stage. A shame. RIP Johnny.

Re: Johnny Cunningham

Oh Johnny, I did not know you long ,
but knew you well.
Ye had the gift ,
ere none could tell.
No man can give more,
than share his love.
Unto us ,
he gave his treasure trove.

Just tell the Lord, I want to be with you.

Re: Johnny Cunningham

For those of you who don't know, Johnny fiddled on Bill Morrissey's CDs, my favorite of which is "Inside." Bill is a folk singer/songwriter from New Hampshire with an Interesting voice and unbelievable lyrics. Johnny's contribution really "made" the album...

Check out his website http://billmorrissey.net/ and under discography and click on Inside. Then listen to a couple of tracks. They're all good, but I like Everybody Warned Me and Off-White.

Re: Johnny Cunningham

What? I had no idea he'd passed! I had the pleasure of hearing him with Kevin Burke at "Celtic Fiddle Festival" here in Portland a couple years back. A very talented and funny man. What a shame...
