At this time of year, I play Jingle Bells and other Xmasy tunes at our session ( when it's getting near closing time). It drives the fiddle player bonkers, but the punters, who are the best non-listeners on the planet, love it and join in with great gusto. Is this a sin?
If you want to add an ITM flavor to Jingle Bells, play the reel Christmas Eve at the same time. The chord structure is identical and they sound good together.
A lot of Christmas tunes translate quite nicely into jigs and reels. A Clare flute player living near London plays a jig version of Silent Night, whilst a London whistle player and 'discoverer' of many fine tunes, living in Dingle, has a tune he calls 'The Christmas Jig', based on 'We Three Kings of Orient'.
Anyone ever tried 'Santa Baby' as a hornpipe? I wouldn't recommend it.
Yeah, jingle bells works over x-mas eve, silent night works as a jig, Goog King Wencless works as a slide/jig, ect. But thank christ they only work once a yeara
Smirk all you want *smirk* but I love Christmas too. The tunes and songs are great, I've sung them all my life and there is always the prospect of various rewards. On top of that the songs are not the usual stuff you get asked to sing.
As for how Jingle Bells and Christmas Eve sound together, try it. They make a good counterpoint melody as do some of the other suggested tunes. And it is only once a year, so enjoy it.
At least there are no little green men running around
We should not be too suprised, as Carols were originaly circle dances.
Ding Dong Merrily On High is of cause sung to the tune of the Official's Branle from Orchasography.
Is that last actually English, or did you pop into some language I don't recognize? What the heck is a Branle from Orchasography? Wait, never mind, I just realized that if I ask, you might tell me...
Okay, Mike, we tried it last night. The first two measures work, the next two measures don't, and the last four do, although it doesn't really sound very good on the second part. :In my opinion, of course. ;)

Only if you take pleasure in it.

Re: Jingle Bells
The fiddler slaps his bow down on the table, to thunderous applause, how much pleasure can a fellow take?

And since the kids over at First Competition have anointed Zina "Queen of the Gods", you can take that as pretty authoritative.

" Deck the halls" transposes into The Piper in the Meadow straying, without too much bother.

Re: Jingle Bells
I have a little set as well!
Come, O Ye Faithful
Angels We Have Heard on High
Hark the Herald Angels Sing
I think that God Rest Ye Gentlemen goes good followed by a tune in eminor, I follow it with Cooley's.
Bwah, I love Xmas!
Cheers,
Armand

Re: Jingle Bells
Heh. Okay, so try duet singing God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, at both half speed and full speed at the same time. Weirdly, it works.

Re: Jingle Bells
Is that anything like singing the collected works of Emily Dickinson to the tune of the Yellow Rose of Texas?

Re: Jingle Bells
No...
but a version of "pop goes the weasel" as a jig is real ugly!

Technically, isn't Pop Goes the Weasel a single jig? Certainly that's when Tony Nother plays it for feisianna...
