I'm getting a little excited about Christmas. Trimming the tree, hanging the stockings and making the wish list so I don't end up with jumpers and socks (except from you mum, of course).
I looking for some great "classic" recordings of ITM. I'm about to the point where I'm going to be heading out to sessions in the local area. I am proficient enough with the fiddle or mandolin to play tunes at speed, I simply don't have the tunes in my head or under my fingers. I have a lot of Martin Hayes, Tommy Peoples, John Carty, Donegal stuff. My fiddle guru suggested:
A Tribute To Joe Cooley
Frankie Gavin, Paul Brock, Charlie Lennon
Noel Hill and Tony Linnane
and of course the Michael Coleman double CD
I'm thinking along the lines of classic, but not daft, widely known and of course, great to play, but not a performance piece. (maybe with a little emphasis on the strings).
The Milestone at the Garden - a collection on Rounder records - is tops for my money. See my wild comments (which I still stand by) in the recordings section.
Yesterday I was in an op shop (a second hand junk shop), and was just cruising past the CD's and tapes, when my attention was caught by an "Ali Bain" tape. Couldn't believe it, for only $2. Amazing find. In great condition too. So thanks to whoever recycled it.
I'll second Noel Hill & Tony Linnane, with some cracking backing by Matt Molloy, Alec Finn & Micheal O Domhnaill, an oldie but a good un. How about Contentment is Wealth? Sean Keane & Matt Molloy.
I don't think that you can beat the CD that introduced me to ITM,which is Kathleen Collins , The fiddle music of Donegal, just fiddle music, and very involving.

How about some Altan? Mairead ni Mhaonaigh is an awesome fiddler.

OK, Kenny, he plays along with them on a fair few tracks. Is that better?

I must be gettin old. I've no quarrel with Altan, but they wouldn't have sprung to mind with reference to classic recordings.
For sheer entertainment value, you can't beat the eponymous Andy Irvine and Paul Brady. That had me dancin about the kitchen this very morning.

Buy Paddy Canny's cd.
One of the most extraordinary fiddle music I've ever heard.

That should read, 'plays with them', and not plays along with them.
