Did anyone hear the BBC radio 4 programme this morning about The Favourite in Holloway? superb. Reg Hall spoke brilliantly as usual .Could someone post a link unless they have already?
I couldn't quite make out the story about the guy starting to sing Country and Western in the Favourite. The barman stopped him, and said ..... (something about cowboys?) Anybody understand what he said?
Very good show. Thanks for the heads-up and the link.
What a great show. Interesting what Reg Hall was saying about storytellers and comedians getting up to do a turn. I remember Billy Connolly once said when he worked in the shipyards on the Clyde, you'd get guys doing the same at breaks on the boat! A little comedy turn or a song. My Da and older brother who worked in the 'yards can confirm this.
I heard the programme and recorded it onto the hard disk direct from a fm radio. I used a line from an output on the radio to the line input on the pc. The software I used was CoolEdit 2000 (not around as such anymore, but Adobe have taken it over, and there must be other applications that can do the job) and an input/output level control that came as part of my XP software.
With stuff that's coming in from the internet, such as streaming radio or soundfiles, I just connect up the headphone output from the pc to the pc's line input, again using CoolEdit 2000. There's no feedback, and it's convenient to save the soundfile on a separete hard disk to the one that's handling the internet connection.

Many thanks to Trevor for bringing this to our notice and to Beardy for supplying the web address.
It was a brief but strong whiff of nostalgia for me.
The presenter interviewed Sally Mulready, who is an old friend, and Sally mentioned Fergus Ryan who used to sing there.
Fergus is almost a neighbour of mine out here in Bilbao and often comes to the session to sing the odd song or two.
Well done Trev and Beardy !
Thanks for that, Aidan. "Paddy in the Smoke" was one of the first trad Irish cds I bought when I began learning to play and it's still my favorite (no pun intended!). Nice to hear some of the background story.
I never did manage to burn it - but I did write to the BBC asking if they could do some copies of it as I'm sure many people here would be interested....

BTW, I'm glad people picked up on the pre-announcement about the The Favourite programme that I posted on Nov 28th.

THE FAVOURITE - last chance to hear!
Last chance to hear a charming and fascinating half-hour programme from Radio 4 on "The Favourite", one of THE session pubs in London in the 60s
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/rams/thu1130.ram
It'll likely come off the web tomorrow.
