I've been directed towards listeneing to some bothy band material, and since christmas is-a-coming, thought i might include it on my list to santa. As I have none of the BB's cds, i was wondering if you session.org folk could give me any recommendations as to the best album, or the album to listen to first?
and i'm a fiddler, so does it make any difference that they had tommy peoples on the first album and kevin burke on the others- or are they as good as each other?
Worth a listen? Yikes. You won't get a better "best of" set than that.
I first heard the Bothy's "1975" in the fall of 1995 and I still think it has the best combination of grace, grit and fire of any recording (pick your genre) I've heard. I don't listen to band efforts much these days but still find myself awestruck by its raw power.
Anyway, you can't really go wrong with any of their recordings although I'd buy the live BBC sessions last, mainly due to the absence of Paddy Keenan on a number of tracks "Out of the Wind.." is fairly low-key compared to "Old Hag" and "1975" but contains some of their best sets including the Maids of Mitchelstown which, to my mind, is the root of the Lunasa sound.
yes,i dont think any band has taken the music any further than the bothies as far as group ensemble playing goes. They are the big full stop as far as that goes.
You should get them all - each is great in its own way. That includes the BBC one - despite the lack of Paddy Keenan on some tracks, I find it pretty exciting!
Happy listening.
Where's the support for "Out of the Wind..."? True it might have not been their most pwerful album, but who can deny the energy in the "Morning Star" track?
Get 'em all. Personally, as far as the best, I guess I'd say 1975. The first album of ITM I remeber hearing. I still have the vinyl LP that my dad bought in 1976.
Not just for the brilliance of the music, but because of the way that one album changed how a generation of us thought about irish music. I don't think one can understand its impact without having been there. We had never heard anything like it before. No-one in ITM today can claim that, because the influence of that album is everywhere.
If you really do have to confine yourself to just one, then it has to be Afterhours. Though I think OOTWITS is the best (but you can't really compare Live to Studio, total different kettle of fish)
But, and this is important, they are all so dammed brilliant and dammed essential I'll wager that you're CD collection has stuff in it that should be traded in if you can't afford all four
thanks for the advice everyone. i think i'l be splashing out soon, prob starting with afterhours, or 1975, but judging from the fact theres no grumbling over them being rubbish (i kinda expected that), only which is the best, impression is that theyre all worth a look. thanks all!
(and for once Mr Gill is entirely right-(!!)- my CD collection is probably going to get an overhaul!)
Well, Michael and I don't always agree but we do about drums. I see that there's a set of bongos advertised in tonight's Evening News. I'm almost tempted to buy them just to ensure they don't turn up in a pub near me.
I actually played my Best of Bothy Band this evening, which I havn't done for a long time. You know she doesn't screech just 'quite' as much as I remember! Must be getting old. When I started playing years ago, I absolutely detested singers in sessions, now I just can't stand them, I'm mellowing.
HAHAHAHA....Michael Gill, you're a treasure...possibly rather corroded and kind of crusty around the edges from all the time spent buried under various bits of earth, but a treasure nonetheless...
Corroded and kind of crusty around the edges from all that time spent in spitting distance of god damn goat thwackers more like. And buried beneath the wall of drivel that endlessly suffocates these beautiful tunes of ours. Exasperated beyond belief by the constant missundersatending of it. And driven to wild and crazy outbursts by the unbeleiveable stupidity of idiots who proffess to love it.
I've probably mentioned this before but I'm not sure if Michael and I have ever met. We probably have, even if we don't remember, and we do know a lot of people in common. For what it's worth, I'm told that he (Yes, you Michael) is a really nice guy and a great fiddle player.
Unfortunately, Tuesday night is awkward for me to go to Sandy Bell's as that's when I go to my "Strathspey and Reel" practice. I don't play there very often at night, in any case, because it's predominantly Irish. You might think that's a bit strange as I'm always here but the bulk of my repertoire is still mainly Scottish. I do love Irish music and know lots of tunes but it's mainly the standards so far. However, I do join Irish sessions at folk festivals as I'm more likely to know the bulk of the tunes there.
Anyway, I hope we will meet some day soon, Michael. If I have an instrument with me, please be kind. I promise that it won't be a drum.
I think it's hilarious that you're both always on here but still have never had a tune together. Either that, or it's really pathetic, I'm not sure which is more appropriate. ;)
We will someday, I'm sure. I tend to visit a variety of sessions where I should really try to be more focused.
However, knowing the company Michael keeps, I can safely assert that he's a much better musician than me.

Tommy Peoples is the greatest, Kevin Burke comes a damn close second .... You need 'em both.

I,ve got 'The Best Of The Bothy Band' on vinyl, it's pretty good apart from Triona's screeching. Worth a listen though.

'Afterhours' is my fav. And I love Triona's vocals.Give me her anyday over Cathy Jordan.

I'm going to chip in with a vote for Afterhours too.
Mind you, that was the first Bothy Band recording I heard so that might explain why I think it's the best.

Why limit yourself to just one? I'd get After Hours, 1975, and Old Hag You Have Killed Me. "Best of" is a great compilation as well.

Personally- all the Bothies, Planxties (y's???) and Chieftains1-4 changed perception- as was said above- get them all.
I go back to those records and listen to pick up tunes all the time
