ABC Software

ABC Software

I really don't know much about computers or indeed computer readable abc notation. I am in the process on learning though.
What is the best software for the abc files and what can it do?
Can a child of 10+ learn to use it?
Is it of any benefit to learning new tunes ?
Will it make learn machinacial?

I teach youngsters using abc of a very similar nature to the stuff posted on this site and think I could encourage them to make the small transition if it is indeed of any use.
Links to sites with the sofware and general good sound advice would be appreicated. ( I know what abc format is, I really only what to know about the software packages, pro and cons to using it)

Re: ABC Software

Seeing as no-one else has responded, I'll direct you to the links section where you can check out various software and abc info.

We've had several discussions re the merits of ABC before. This was the most recent (Sorry, Zina. I'm stealing your job :-)

I use ABC2Win which I find very useful, although I get some glitches now that I've installed Windows XP but they're not serious. Yes, a child of 10+ (probably much younger) could learn to use this. You can learn the basics in an hour or so. The rest is just practice. Also, for this site, we have a fairly simplified system eg note lengths are always eigths so that makes things easier.

If you already know standard notation, it is still useful as programs like ABC2Win will convert the ABCs to standard notation. It is fairly easy to play the tune directly from the ABC but I always convert just for my own convenience. It is very handy to have some knowledge as there are so many tunes available in ABC and is a very convenient tool for submitting tunes via the Internet. You can send them by e-mail too.

Re: ABC Software

Sorry, Lars. You posted before me. ABC2Win is pretty good and not very expensive. You can download it for a trial period as well.
I've found the Tunatron Converter doesn't always work either. It will on occasion. I think it must depend on how the ABC was compiled.

Re: ABC Software

"I have tried copying and pasting abc from tunedb to tuneotron converter at concertina. net and it just doesn't work."

There's a known problem with c&ping from the ABC search engine, but I've never had a problem with any tunes from here. If you can point me to an example, maybe I can figure out what you're doing wrong.

Re: ABC Software

You certainly can on the full version. You have to create a new file. So, go to "File", select "New", and give the file a name. It's easy but, perhaps, it doesn't work with the trial version.

Re: ABC Software

If CTRL-X and P doesn't work, try SHIFT-DELETE and SHIFT-INSERT

Re: ABC Software

The Tunetron is a little tricky. Make sure that you have and X:1 (or what ever) in the compilation or it will not work. Also there are times when the F: field has a URL in it and it gets translated into meaningless notation.

Re: ABC Software

Here's the URL for the tune converter:

http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

Open a new window in your browser (under File menu at the top) and then copy the above URL into that browser and load that page.

You should see a page with Concertina.net across the top and ABC Convert-A-Matic lower down, with a box below it.

Now highlight the following ABC text, starting at the X: 1 line and going through the end of the last line of abc.

X: 1
T: Rosemary Lane
M: 6/8
L: 1/8
R: jig
K: Dmaj
FEF DFA|dce dcB|AdB AFD|EFD EAG|
FEF DFA|dce dcB|Ade faf|gec d3 :|
|:aba fed|gfg ecA|fed Bcd|edB ABc|
dedAFA|Bed cbA|faf gec|Adc d3 :|

*Right* click on the highlighted text with your mouse. A menu should pop up with various choices, including "Copy". Select copy and click on it. The menu will go away.

Now go to the window where you have Concertina.net loaded. Put your mouse in the box in the middle of the page and right click. Again the menu should come up. Select "paste" from that menu, and the ABC text should appear in the box.

Then click on the Submit button at the bottom of the page.
