A friend of mine has an ornate Paramount tenor banjo that he'd like to sell. There's really no demand in this area for such a beast and he's wondering what would be a good way to go about selling it. If you know of a shop that has a demand for such an instrument I'd appreciate any ideas. He's in the US but I think he'd be willing to ship it to a reputable dealer in the UK if necessary. And any idea of the approximate value of a Style 5 Paramount in good condition?
ebay.com is actually not a horrible way to sell a decent instrument; as long as the buyer knows they're responsible for shipping and insurance both ways should they decide they don't love it, it's a pretty safe way to deal.
Elderly Instrumetns in Michigan is a reputable dealer in new and used instruments, and would be a good place to check about banjo prices / market. elderly.com
Lark in the Morning in California have a remendous catalog and are good folks to check in with just for info/ideas larkinam.com
Bernunzio Instruments in Rochester, New York has a wide selection. I bought two from them about two years ago. A week before I was there, Gerry O'Connor had dropped in and bought a banjo from them:
Ebay is a good source of current market values. There are always Paramount tenor banjos being offered. Do a search for 'completed items' to get a list of what the final bids were for recently sold Paramount banjos.
There is a young lady from Bedford in these forums who calls herself "TradGirl". I believe she is looking to buy a new banjo, but I'm really not sure what exactly she is looking for. To my knowlldge she is in Ireland at the minute, so maybe your friend would like to hold off for a few days until she gets back to England, to see if she may be interested in it? As I said, I really don't know what make etc she may be interested in, so this could be pointless as she may want to try an instrument before she buys it etc, or may have bought one in Ireland when she's over here... but just thought I would mention it anyhow. I believe you can send her a private message by logging in and "Send an Email" on: http://www.thesession.org/members/display.php/7160 - no harm in asking I suppose?
Wow, thanks for all the good information! I don't know the scale length of the banjo, and although I saw it once I don't remember much about it. I wish he would learn to play it himself, he's a very good guitar player, but I'm afraid he's not into ITM. Thanks again.

Re: How to sell a banjo?
Take it to Washington D.C. Lots of good Irish players there. Or see if Mandolin Bros. in NYC will take it on consignment.
What's the scale length?

Re: How to sell a banjo?
I bought my banjo from Neil Kenny at Vintage Banjos in Concord, New Hampshire: http://www.vintagebanjos.com
Neil is a TheSession member (Banjomick) though I'm not sure if he spends much time here.

Re: How to sell a banjo?
why sell it?...just pitch it out to the dumpster, you might get lucky and hit and old piano-accordion
