"Oh, is this the night that you go to 'your music' "?

"Oh, is this the night that you go to 'your music' "?

Sometimes said in a friendly manner but other times it can be intended as a bit sarcastic or patronising. What type of comments do *you* tend to receive from "outsiders", eg friends, non friends, and family as regards your chosen pastime? :-) Do they bother you?

I guess I'm lucky...my friends are all musicians so they understand as they run off to various rehearsal and jam sessions and whathaveyou. And my family thinks it's cool and drops in from time to time to listen.

No, I can be out several nights at a time too. Listening to sessions and bands, if not playing myself. Mind you, there are occasional weeks when I don't go out at all. Very rarely though. :-)

Re: "Oh, is this the night that you go to 'your music' "?

"Oh those winter evenings must just fly by".

This gets said in reference to TheMusic, and also my training of sheep dogs, and growing rare species of cacti from seed, and usually comes from someone whose main cultural achievement is the ability to belch and fart simultaneously at the top of a star-jump.

In the main, however, comments and remarks from friends are of a positive nature - and imply some level of admiration.

Which was nice.

"You mean you do the same thing at the same time on the same night at the same place every week? Bizarre..."

John J, how can you be out on several nights... at the same time? Like, you're out on Monday, and you're out on Tuesday, but the occaision when you're out Monday is the same occaision as the one when you're out Tuesday?

I meant "in a row" or possibly "in the same week". And well you know what I meant. :-)

Yes, i see now that there was a strait forward way of understanding that comment. I prolly shouldn't read these posts this early in the morning.

My wife usually says "Is this the night your friends are coming over to play?". She does fix us all dinner though.

He clearly means that he has several bodies, in different parts of the world, hooked up to his mind, for example one in China and one in the UK. The China body and the UK body go out for a tune simultaneously; but for the China body, it's Monday, and for the UK body it's Tuesday. So he can go out on different nights, at the same time. John J, are you a "hive" entity?

Re: "Oh, is this the night that you go to 'your music' "?

OK, to briefly get real on this, as it's a nice wee thread really. Although a fair proportion of my friends and acquaintances are through the music, I also know people through (obviously) family - 3 out of 4 siblings are musicians anyway. My "in law" family are Irish, or of Irish extraction and are de facto adherents of this culture...except one or two who don't like "the ceili music" but prefer C+W. As I've never considered these ones to be anywhere near my intellectual level anyway, they've never put me off. I've had some work colleagues turn up to some sessions and enjoyed it, but I wouldn't ram it down anyone's throat. My mates in my running club are of the world music/folk music ilk, so it's good when they turn up at sessions. Similarly with friends we've built up round here through family (ie the kids) I gave one family who looked after Fergus and Roisin the night I went up to see Helen Roche's album launch, a copy of Helen's album....these people were from a background of Glam/Punk...but they absolutely loved Helen's album (Nell on this site)...but who wouldn't?

Re: "Oh, is this the night that you go to 'your music' "?

My non-ITM friends and acquaintances -- come to think of it, I don't have many friends and acquaintances who aren't involved with ITM -- are for the most part genuinely interested to hear about my musical activities. When I talk about the music, I tend to convey the sense of community and camaraderie which surrounds it, so they can see that this isn't some weird eccentric habit only a few crazed individuals take part in (OK, I can see a few of you sitting up at that).
